Rory liked Prim well enough before the Reaping. He didn’t know her well, but she was a year younger than him in school. She was friendly to everyone. She was the Seam girl with fair hair and blue eyes. She was Katniss’ sister, and Katniss was important to Gale, so Katniss was important to him, too.

After the Reaping, everything changed. Gale still wouldn’t let him come hunting, but he let him help sell. This included distribution to the Everdeen household. Sometimes he went alone, the days Gale’s eyes brewed dark and his jaw clenched. Sometimes Gale would come with him, and he would tug one of Prim’s braids and give her a crooked grin before moving away to whisper with Mrs. Everdeen.

Then, Prim would talk to Rory. She would tell him about her week, chattering excitedly about her friends at school or her goat or a new herb she had planted. He would listen, smile indulgently, sometimes sneak her a couple of strawberries. These mornings, she always seemed so upbeat, so normal. But he knew better.

His whole family would go to the Everdeens’ house in the evenings to watch the Games. They didn’t have a television at home and there was no way they could watch in the public square with everyone else, not with Posy and certainly not with Gale. At six pm every night, Prim would sit on the floor next to Rory and pull Posy in her lap.

When they showed Katniss on the screen, she would hold his hand tight in hers. At first she would stop breathing, and he held his breath too, somehow thinking the air trapped in his chest would give strength to hers. When she let out her breath, he released his too.

Their eyes would meet and he would try a reassuring smile. She would stare at him, blue eyes brilliant and piercing. She never looked frightened at these moments, like she was absolutely sure Katniss would come back alive and well. That look terrified him. It thrilled him, too.

Then she would be back to normal, no beautiful, haunting stare, just a kindhearted smile and a kiss to Posy’s hair.
