lakes and love
Merlin wonders what it would be like to live on the bottom of the lake. To see all the things that went on there - to go once again up to the Gates of Avalon or find Excalibur again, dirtied but still shining through and so clearly pure in its power.
Only when Merlin is alone does he find himself conspiratorially thinking of walking along the bottom of it until he reaches the end. The end not being just the end of the lake, but the end of the earth. He thinks of simply walking off that edge, and going into the infinite sky.
Maybe there, he could find everything. A place where Morgana had no nightmares, and Arthur could stay the hopeful and just prince he was, and Gwen could senselessly kiss all the boys she desired to - not that she had truly been prevented from doing so before.
Quite selfishly, though, Merlin only really hoped for a place where he could be loved. Not a secret love like with Freya, or a fatherly love like with Gaius, nor a warm, comfortable love like from his mother. What he wanted was an open, bright, and loud love with no secrets and so much magic without fear or crying or coldness.
hospitals and a baby brother
Dean is so sure that if he holds Sam - as his father suggests - that he will break him, because what else could babies be if not breakable? Especially this one, his brother, so incomprehensibly small and delicate with blotchy skin and closed eyes. Dean just shakes his head and his dad laughs real deep and rolling before placing Sammy into Dean’s arms anyway.
His brother is smaller than the baby dolls he sees the neighbor girls playing with, and Dean knows right then that there is no way that Cathy or her little sister Susie are coming over because he’s seen them dragging those dolls on the floor and he’s seen dolls left outside when it began to rain. Even if they had more, it suddenly seemed so inexcusable, to let something that precious be senselessly thrown away.
Dean is well aware of what it means to be a big brother because his dad started drilling it into his brain before his mama even had a bump in her belly. Dean already knows how to take care of his mama when his dad is away, so Sammy is gonna be taken care of real good.
