Mike Novick hurries into the war room at the Northwest Operations Complex, snapping his cellphone shut as he enters. Logan gives him a nod, then turns his attention back to what Secretary of Defense Surnow is saying via video feed.
"--we can't wait any longer. Without retaliation the people that support these groups will consider it open season on this country."
"I agree, Mr. Secretary, which is why I gave the order two days ago to mobilize forces in the region--"
"We're not talking about moving men in to the area," one of the Generals of the Armed Forces says, and Mike glances over at Logan whose eyes are bugging out with anger at the interruption. "We need to know them we're not fucking around and hit them with a nuclear weapon. They want to nuke our cities, we'll show them just what it's like."
"Killing thousands--maybe millions--of innocent civilians isn't going to dissuade anyone. Do that and you give people who currently have no issues with the United States every reason to strap on a dynamite vest," National Security Advisor Cassar pipes up.
"They've already killed thousands in Valencia, and now they're poised to make a large part of downtown L.A. radioactive for the next seventy-five years. Give them a taste of their own medicine, I say," the general adds.
Mike breaks in before the discussion can go in another circle. "If you'll excuse me, on that note, Karen Hayes from the L.A. Homeland Security office is on line four with an update on the situation. May I patch her through?"
"Please do, Mike," Logan says, leaning forward. "Ms. Hayes, you're on with myself and the Joint Chiefs. What's the situation at CTU?"
"Mr. President, Division has managed to tap into the CTU surveillance feed and we can confirm that they remaining suitcase nuke is on-site. Furthermore, so far all of Division's attempts to make contact with the hostiles have met a dead end; at the moment the hostiles are not communicating with us. It appears they are setting up some kind of video equipment however--"
"How close is the strike team at Division to going in?" Logan asks.
"Very close, sir; with the surveillance feed up, they're finalizing plans on how to get in at this moment," Hayes replies. "It will take approximately fifteen minutes to finalise the plan, approach CTU, take positions and move in."
"They could detonate this nuclear bomb at any minute, and there's nothing to stop the terrorists from detonating it as soon as the first shot is fired," Cassar says.
"Ms. Hayes, if the amount of nuclear material in the suitcase nuke was detonated in a dirty bomb scenario, what would the effects be and how widespread would it be?" Logan asks.
Cassar turns and stares at Logan. "You can't be serious."
"Serious about what?" one of the Joint Chiefs asks, at the same time Karen Hayes' voice comes over the speaker, sounding a little shaken.
"We don't have the figures on that sir, but it would be more contained. However--"
Logan cuts her off, turning to the video image of the Air Force General at Edwards Air Force Base. "General Gordon, how quickly can one of your planes lock on a target in the Los Angeles area?"
