So a few things, because I feel compelled to write. First, I am intrigued and saddened that the college that was mine for a while decided to rebel against the so-called man. A figure as divisive as Nichol had to go. I don't think college presidents should be great social crusaders. They should be fighting against the enemies of education from

I've meant to write, and I apologize for not having done so, to wish you well in your sickness and in your health (no, I'm not marrying you ... in the words of Carl Brutananadilewski, "I'm not that WAY!") since Thanksgiving and Christmas. I agree with your assessment of things at W&M. There is fault on both sides for sure - it's a nasty break, he didn't help things any by his note, and the College is in a state of crisis. The only solution, really, is to relegate rule to an oligarchy of six: you, me, Pat, Sokoly, Danny, and Owen. Yes. Iota Eta Pi will rule the College. We'll set things right.
Protest culture is a dangerous thing because it trades on emotions and runs the risk of being engaged in for its own sake and not for some real benefit. It's an outlet of unrest, perhaps, but it can get out of hand in a hurry.
As for academia, I'm lucky enough to be at a place where there is a real sense of community and congeniality in spite of fairly diverse pluralism. The way academia is now can be guilty of immoderation - an "education" predicated solely on facts and never involving character and good action is presumptuous, meaningless, and misleading. All told, I will pray for you and for all who need grace to see these things.
I ask you to remember two things:
1.) Having read Bargh and Chartrand's "Unbearable Automaticity of Being," I know there are issues with what is in one's conscious control as regards the springs of action. I say, they can take away your infallibility over yourself, but they can never take away YOUR FREEDO.. I mean, you. They can never take away YOU.
2.) Beauty fades. Scars heal. But VD is forever.

2. Philosophy is a great form of academia. There are tons of ideas and it seems that everyone can find a niche. It's hard for me to stay enchanted when I go to a conference that has seminars on explaining the psychology of people being religious, as if it is some sort of strange phenomena that has no bearing on reality. If science had the logical precision of philosophy, life may be better. Anyway, it is exciting.
I also like your points otherwise
