Saw myself a little movie you might have heard of called Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events. The first thing to note is that it is a very pretty movie. Parts of it were as Tim Burton-esque as you can get without actually having Tim Burton direct your movie. The kids were cute and had many witty lines, and Jim Carey's schtick fits well with the character of Count Olaf. If I could find one thing wrong (and I often can), it would be that the amount of belief suspension necessary often reaches astronomical levels. One could almost call it A Series of Improbable Events. This, of course, was a problem with the books too, but the problem was less noticeable because the amount of disconnect one can tolerate when reading is greater than when one watches a movie with live actors. However, I'm willing to give the movie the proverbial thumbs up overall.
Another problem unrelated to the actual quality of the movie is that the sound in the theater kept inflecting in weird ways, often giving the children's voices the effect of being possessed by demons from a nether-realm. Now I, being the slightly twisted individual that I am, was incredibly amused by this, and actually thought that the movie would be better with the demon possesed children. However, the sound kept switching back and forth, which was distracting. Damn it, either have them possessed by infernal demon spawn or not; none of this sissy, half way in-between stuff!
