Chapter 16

Three years later.

“Hey! Nino!” Aiba beamed at the other boy. “Look! This is great!!”

Nino didn’t spend more than two seconds to glance at the magazine in Aiba’s hand. As perverted as Aiba always was, it was a hot beautiful girl’s photo and she wore a bikini that showed every curve of her body. Nino wasn’t interested in those girls, though. They looked boring. Even their smile was deceiving. Why would people like to see those, anyway?

“Hey! You have no energy today!” Aiba complained when Nino didn’t show much reaction to his enthusiasm. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing,” Nino just shrugged. But he was lying. There was something going on and he couldn’t tell Aiba because he didn’t know how he was feeling about it. He didn’t even know if he could believe that either.

Ohno was going to come home this Sunday.

That was what his parents had said. Nino himself didn’t know anything about Ohno anymore, since the day Ohno had left home. Ohno had shut him down completely since that day. Sometimes, Nino felt like he never really had Ohno in his life - that Ohno was just a dream, a really nice dream which Nino didn’t want to get up.

That day, when he went to visit Ohno in Tokyo, at the end he just couldn’t. Ohno had never showed up, even though Nino had been waiting for him until midnight. Standing in front of his dorm and counting each minute passed, feeling frustration ate him up from inside, Nino had been able to only come up with one conclusion. The realization had hit him hard on his face, and tears had welled up inside Nino’s eyes. He hadn’t hid it anymore and let tears roll down, had not cared that people looking at him and hadn’t cared that he had looked so pathetic.

Ohno had been avoiding him.

What else could it be? Ohno hadn’t answered his calls. Ohno hadn’t replied his messages. Ohno hadn’t talked to him through phone call. Ohno hadn’t even been here, where he had been supposed to be. Ohno wasn’t the type of partying too late. The only reason was, Ohno definitely didn’t want to meet Nino.

But why? Nino didn’t know. What did he do to deserve Ohno’s coldness? He had no idea. What did he do wrong? Why didn’t Ohno just tell Nino if he did something wrong?

Or even if Ohno had already forgot the love for him and Ohno had loved someone else... He could’ve just told Nino. That would have hurt Nino less than this. That would have hurt Nino less than knowing nothing and then realizing that he had lost Ohno forever already.
That day, Nino had come home with a broken heart. His mom had greeted him at the threshold and when she had seen his teary face, she had hugged him tightly without any words.

Since that day, the sadness could never leave Nino’s heart. The loneliness was the only thing he felt throughout years. Even when he closed his eyes, he still could see Ohno’s face clearly, and it ached too much that he didn’t want to sleep alone at night. He couldn’t sleep normally, he could only sleep when the light was on or there was someone around. That someone happened to be Aiba sometimes, when Nino wasn’t able to endure the loneliness, he could call Aiba and spent the night with his best friend. With Aiba’s noisy talk Nino could temporarily forgot Ohno and sleep could claim him easier...

“You look distracted during the class too.” Aiba added when he saw Nino’s face. Nino didn’t look at Aiba or the newest game inside his hand. He seemed like he didn’t know what he was looking at at all.
“Yeah.” Nino didn’t try to protest. It was true.

After that, time flied the way Nino didn’t like it to. Every day he spent doing his homework and practicing music. Every night he spent to cry over Ohno’s disappearance. He was tired of crying, but every corner of this home had Ohno’s presence. Even the slightest scent of Ohno could make him feel so emotional. He wanted to ask Ohno why, and he wanted to hold him, and he also wanted to just beat him up from frustration. But he couldn’t do anything.

Ohno had left his life just as suddenly as he had come. And left scars all over Nino’s heart.

“Hey, this Sunday we have a baseball match.” Aiba suddenly informed “You wanna join?”
“This Sunday?” The word “Sunday” rang alert inside Nino. He half wanted to run away from this meeting with Ohno - because it had been too long from that day, because Nino had managed to overcome the loneliness, and never again he wanted to experience the same sadness when Ohno left.

Or because if now Ohno told him that he had disappeared because he didn’t love Nino anymore, Nino definitely would lost all his sanity.
Nino never wanted to hear any of those. He wanted to stay a little longer in his world where he still hoped that Ohno loved him - even though he knew it was just his stupid wish.

Because he still loved Ohno so, so much that it was hard to deny. There had been anger throughout years, but now, it disappeared. The love remained still, but Nino didn’t want to meet Ohno - the present Ohno. Maybe he was just in love with the past Ohno - who had always been nice and kind and who had loved him dearly - not this Ohno who was cold with him and didn’t even care when Nino had got into college. Ohno hadn’t even said congratulations. No birthday wishes, no ‘happy new year’s or ‘merry Christmas’s.

Nothing.

He felt like he had lost Ohno forever since that day.
Without reason.

And he felt so stupid. Stupid for falling in love in the first place. Stupid for still loving Ohno until now. It was a forbidden love, after all. No one supported them. Their family even hated them for being together. Why did they have to fall in love with each other at the first place? If they hadn’t had, it would’ve been much easier now. Ohno would have been just a brother who was coming back from Tokyo. Nothing more. No complicate feeling like this.

No heartbreaking being felt like this.

“I’m in.” Nino said finally. He hadn’t prepared to meet Ohno yet. He wasn’t sure if he would punch Ohno on his face or he would hug the other man to death. He wasn’t sure what he was feeling towards Ohno right now. A love-hate relationship, maybe. He half wanted to meet Ohno desperately, but half wanted to run away from Ohno, from his broken heart forever.

----------------------------

Ohno had finished packing. Everything was okay, his paintings were sent back before his arrival. His luggage laid around the room. He had done his three years in University safely. And still alive. It was the most amazing thing.

There were many offers for Ohno to stay and work in Tokyo. Yet he chose to come back instead. Because he had another important thing to do at his hometown. He wanted to come back and never leave again, because three years of torture now had come to the end.

That was what he hoped for.

Although he wasn’t so sure about that. Did Nino forget him already? How much did Nino hate him since then? Did Nino have another person already? What could he do if Nino refused to meet him again? What would he do if Nino already decided that Ohno was no longer an important person in his life? Everything was rolling in Ohno’s mind, and the closer the coming home day was, the more panicked Ohno got. He didn’t know how to face Nino. He didn’t know if Nino wanted to meet him or not. Or Nino would kick Ohno out of his room, and Nino would shut the door in front of him, and Nino would treat him with hatred, like the first day they met.

But more than that, what Ohno was scared of was Nino not caring about him anymore.
Maybe Nino didn’t care about him being there or not anymore. Maybe Nino had forgot him and all the sadness he had brought to Nino’s heart already.

That might be the best for him, Ohno thought sadly, but it still was heartbreaking on Ohno’s part. Ohno didn’t think he could stand it if it was true. If Nino already stopped caring about him, about his love... What should have he done?

Looked how he had treated Nino. If he was Nino, he would’ve also hated himself terribly.

He sighed helplessly. Those worries completely invaded his mind and he couldn’t get them out of his head. He was desperate to know, but also scared to know the result.
However, he was still coming home. In the next three days.
