Chapter 14: Trust your love

“Satoshi!!!” Sho’s voice was the first thing he heard when he came back to his house at around midnight. He was welcomed by a suffocating embrace from Aiba, who was hugging him by all his strength. Ohno tried to look around, he found Jun standing at the threshold, looking relieved, with his hand put on his left chest as if saying ‘thank God’. Finally his eyes met Nino, the person he wanted to see most in the world right now, but just by looking him at his sad eyes, Ohno couldn’t stand the guilt squirming inside him.

He managed to get out of Aiba’s hold after giving him some pat on his shoulder. When he turned to Nino, the man was still looking at him, confused and worried. But more than that, he could see the relief in Nino’s eyes, as if the man was going to cry at any time, and Ohno knew he would if there were the only the two of them. Feeling the complicated mixture of happiness and guilty inside him, Ohno approached Nino quietly. The other three stayed still as they felt something was going on. Aiba and Sho looked at each other worriedly; while Jun couldn’t take his eyes off those two and feeling clearly the chance for him to win over Ohno was coming to the end.

“Nino…” Ohno called softly. Nino didn’t move as Ohno touched his arm “I’m sorry…”

There was a flow of emotions flashed through Nino’s face. At that moment Ohno could feel clearly how much Nino had been worried, terrified even. The man rushed into Ohno’s opened arms, his arms wrapped tightly and desperately around Ohno, his face buried in Ohno’s shoulder. Ohno could see Nino’s body finally relax in his hold, but Nino’s arms was still shaking by the way he gripped Ohno’s shirt tightly. Ohno squeezed Nino in his arms reassuringly, and his eyes closed to feel the welcoming warmth all over his body. This was what he wanted, he thought, this was totally different from the way Ninomiya had held him. He couldn’t feel more peaceful than this, when everything around him seemed disappear and it was only him and Nino remained in the world.

“Where were you?” Nino whispered, his hot breath tickling Ohno’s bare nape. “I… I was freaking worried here.”

“I’m sorry,” Ohno rubbed Nino’s back as he said coaxingly. He had disappeared since morning, without any message left for Nino to know what was going on with him. He didn’t want Nino to know the reason; it might be too much for Nino to bear. Knowing Ninomiya had known about him was bad enough, knowing that the person he hated the most in the world had kidnapped and nearly raped his lover now might be the worst news ever. “I’ve… been wandering around.”

All of them turned to look at him suspiciously. Nino had pulled away from the embrace and staring at him, his eyes burning and insistent. He knew it was the worst lie ever, but he didn’t want them to know. He didn’t want them to know now maybe he had become Ninomiya’s new target; it would worry them and freak Nino out. So he chose to keep silent. Nino didn’t believe his answer, Ohno could tell, but he had no choice.
Finally, Sho sighed and broke the silence between them.

“You scared us to dead, Satoshi. First, that Ninomiya’s appearance…” Sho stole a look at Nino, who refused to look at anyone else but Ohno, and continued “And second, you disappeared. Don’t do that again, okay?”

“I’m… I’m sorry,” Ohno stuttered. He turned to Sho, apparently avoided Nino’s eyes and bowed at them with a stiff smile on his tired face “I… was spacing out and lost track of time.”

“Really?” Jun suddenly asked, his tone was full of suspicion as he didn’t intend to let this go that easy “I can’t believe you can space out that much, Satoshi!”

“Yeah…” Aiba mumbled beside him. Nino didn’t say anything; his friends did all the talking. He just kept his stare on Ohno, waiting for his answer.

“I… something bothered me.” Ohno said, it was half of the truth, to be honest. He didn’t want to dig further into this topic, since he already was too tired today and all he wanted to do now was sleeping, with Nino in his arms and didn’t need to think of anything else. So he added tiredly after that, when no one said anything. “Can I… go to sleep? I’m exhausted, guys. I’m very thankful for all of you to worry about me. Really, I’m sorry.”

“We know,” Sho sighed again and rubbed his temple. “You’re right. You need to sleep. We should go, Masaki, Jun.”

They all said good bye and all left, with the suspicious glance from Jun. Ohno closed his door in relief, but he totally forgot that there was someone he really needed to talk to except his friends.

“Where were you, Ohchan?” Nino asked. He noticed, Ohno groaned in his mind. “You were not just spacing out and wandered around, were you?”

“Nino…” Ohno took a deep breath and exhaled in frustration. “Can’t we talk about this later? I’m really tired.”

Nino just looked at him with his insecure eyes, and then he nodded quietly. More than happy, Ohno just approached him and hugged him again, but this time Nino didn’t let him, as he backed away and shook his head.

“You should go to sleep,” Nino said quietly and turned away, putting a line between them suddenly. Ohno stood still, staring at Nino’s back, feeling all frustrated and tired.

It was the coldest night he had spent with Nino ever, since Nino refused to turn to him and distance himself to the other end of the bed, refused to look at Ohno in his eyes.
-----------------------------------------

Jun stirred slightly in his bed. It was early in the morning, the sun hadn’t risen yet and the remaining silence of night was still lingering around. He rolled onto his side, covering his eyes with his arms, refused to get up at such a time. He was never an early riser.
But the phone suddenly rang somewhere beside his head and he grunted in annoyance, his hand wiped through the blanket to find his phone lying under the pillows. Didn’t bother himself to look at the screen to know who it was, he pressed the accept button.

“Moshi moshi? Jun-san?”

It was Nino. Jun arched his eyebrows, wondered what Nino called him for. He peered at the clock and realized that it was only 5 in the morning.

“Hai?”
“Ano… I’m in front of the shop now. Can you open the door for me?”
“Eh?” Jun sat up on his bed in confusion. He shook his head to get awake fully as he reached for his coat and put it on. “What are you doing here so early?”
“Just… let me in, okay?” Nino’s quiet voice prevented him from asking any further. Jun grunted and hung up the phone as he strode to his front door and opened it quickly.
“What’s wrong?” was the first question Jun asked, with a pale-looking Nino standing in front of his shop, shaking slightly with the coldness outside. He looked at Jun with tired eyes as he apparently didn’t sleep at all last night. Jun sighed and let him in. Nino stepped into the cozy home thankfully; his coat was still tightened around his slim body.
“What happened? Where is Satoshi?” Jun asked after making a cup of coffee for Nino and one for himself, and they served themselves at a table. Nino cupped his hand around the cup, hot steam warmed his face and he looked a little ruddier than when he had just come.
He shook his head quietly and with a sad smile, he looked up at Jun.
“He’s sleeping at home. I left alone.” Nino turned the cup in his hand.

Jun arched his eyebrows questioningly. He took a sip from his cup and put it down on the table, leaned back onto the sofa and stared at the ceiling. Somehow he could understand it. Something he had always suspected it from the beginning - though Nino had tried hard to hide it from him, he still sensed it. The feeling Nino and Ohno had for each other was not only friendship, at least he could sense it clearly from Ohno - the older man had no intention to hide it from anyone. But as for Nino - though Nino had tried so much to not show it - at time like this when his mask was breaking open, Jun could see it clearly just how much affection Nino had for Ohno. But he didn’t say anything. He couldn’t say anything at all. It was bitter seeing Ohno shining in love with someone else - someone he had just met for months, and totally unaware of Jun’s love which had always been his for years till now.

Jun sighed heavily as he leaned back. To be honest, sometimes he was jealous with the man sitting across him. What if Jun was the one who had Ohno’s love? Maybe it would be a totally different story... But he couldn’t hate Nino - he had never felt like hating Nino, because he just couldn’t. Looking at Nino like this, something like sympathy raising in his heart, maybe because he knew Nino and he had things in common - their love for Ohno, for instance.

“I don’t know what happened between you two…” Jun began. Nino didn’t look at him, but he shifted uncomfortably at his seat. “And I’m not going to ask. But if you’re here at this time and you have anything to tell me, just spit it out!”

Nino was startled as Jun had raised his voice at the last words. Jun had never been in good mood on mornings, especially early mornings, being dragged up mercilessly around 5 am, from the person who had stolen his love away, waiting for him to say anything but all he received was an unwelcomed silence.
“I’m sorry…” Nino stuttered as he struggled for words. “I… I just don’t know how to say, you know…”
“Then say it straightly just as you think.” Jun put his hand behind his back and said.
“I…” Nino hesitated, but then he pulled himself together and finally looked up at Jun’s eyes. “Jun, I… I don’t know what to do now.”
“What to do with what?” Jun frowned. Nino had a trouble look on his face.
“Ohchan.” Nino replied, and buried his face to his hands. “I don’t know, I think he’s hiding something from me…”
“What if he does?” Jun rolled his eyes “He doesn’t have to tell you everything, you know.”
Nino looked hurt when he held Jun’s eyes, and he mumbled under his breath.
“I know…”
“It’s in the case he and you don’t love each other at all.” Jun added nonchalantly and put the cup away. Nino’s cup was still untouched, laying on the table and cooled down.
Nino opened his mouth, but immediately shut it up when he knew what Jun was talking about. He looked away from Jun’s eyes. Jun knew clearly it was not Nino’s fault, so although he wanted them to break apart, it was hard for him to do anything to make it happen.
“You don’t need to hide it.” Jun finally exhaled sharply. He felt his heart tightened in his chest. “You love him.”
“I…” Nino was about to protest when he saw Jun’s stare. He lowered his head, his cheeks flushed as he bit his lips worriedly. “I… I’m sorry.”
“You don’t need to… Hell, I know this would happen.” Jun growled in frustration, leaned back and closed his eyes. He didn’t want Nino to look at them, because he felt like the latter could read his feeling easily. “Just spit it out, Nino. Stop being so girly!”
“I’m not!” Nino protested weakly with his cheeks reddened. “I just… you know, I think it concerns that person…”
“You mean Ninomiya?” Jun’s attention was drawn back to the problem “How is it concern him?”
“I think you already know who he is…” Nino bit his lips and looked at him, waiting.
“I just know a little. From that incident, you know.” Jun shook his head “I don’t really understand.”
Nino lowered his head and his voice to a barely audible voice.
“I think he’s not giving up on me so easily…” Nino whispered, more to himself than the waiting Jun “He’d follow me, no matter how many times I run away from him…”
“I think you’re supposed to have amnesia,” Jun exclaimed, his arms fold across his chest “So you remember?”
“I just started to recall these fragments since I met him. Since that day,” Nino’s brows ceased “Everything came back slowly…”
“So who are you, Nino? Are you the person who we always believe you are?”
Nino opened his mouth, then closed it hesitantly, and he looked thoughtful. But then, he started to speak. About his real identity, about his dark life before he met them, about his fear for Ninomiya. Nino didn’t talk into details, but Jun could still understand what Nino had been through till now, how much misery he had endured. And nothing except sympathy remained in Jun’s tightened heart. Nino’s eyes were dry, but Jun knew it was because Nino was holding himself back. He just simply couldn’t cry in front of Jun.
“So you said… that Ninomiya still wants to bring you back?” Jun asked quietly after Nino had finished.
“Rather than that, I’m worried that he’s planning on something else…” Nino shook his head tiredly “I think Ohchan’s disappearance yesterday has something to do with him. But Ohchan doesn’t want to tell me.”
“Maybe he doesn’t want you to worry.” Jun said thoughtfully.
“But it worries me more!” Nino raised his tone. Jun glared at him. “I mean, I don’t want to trouble him more with my problem. If Ninomiya’s going to do anything to Ohchan, I’d rather run away again…”
“You don’t think that’s why he didn’t tell you?” Jun sighed in frustration “That he’s afraid that you would run away again?”
“What…?” Nino stopped at that moment. “But... I can’t... I just can’t. I don’t want him to be in danger because of me!”
“That’s not your decision to make.” Jun shook his head “That’s Satoshi’s. He’s the one who will choose to stay or not.”
“But...”
“God, Nino, you’re really annoying. Why don’t you just think about Satoshi’s feeling? Why don’t you fight against that Ninomiya for your love? Are you planning on hiding forever?”
“I…” Nino shook his head, his eyes were now staring into space “I… don’t know. I’m not sure I can. I...”
“You are underestimating Satoshi.” Jun sighed. “That guy is a lot more stubborn than he appeared to be. If it’s what he wants, he will do it no matter what. Not you, not me, no one can stop him. Understand?”
Nino didn’t say anything as he blinked his eyes.
“Come back to him,” Jun waved his hand “Today you have a day off. Just come back and make it up. You can’t avoid him if you love him.”
“But, Jun…” Nino started, but seeing the look in Jun’s face, Nino knew that Jun had given up his love because of him “I’m sorry.”
“You’re supposed to say ‘thank you’.” Jun avoided Nino’s look as he turned his head to look outside the window.
“…Thank you, Jun.” Nino finally said and bowed at Jun “Really, really thank you.”
And then he left, hurriedly ran along the pavement, came back to Ohno’s apartment.
Being left alone in the shop at an early hour, Jun grunted disapprovingly as he leaned back to the sofa. An urge to close the shop for today invaded his mind and as he gave it some thoughts, he decided that he needed a break, right now. There was too many things happened the past few weeks, starting with Nino’s appearance and now everything was like tangled threads and he didn’t know where to start anymore.
