-------------------------------------

It was when he woke up and felt the lack of someone’s warmth on his back that he realized Satoshi had already left.

Kazunari sat up on his king-size bed, which was now too big for his liking, because he hated the feeling of being left alone (no, it’s not that he felt lonely when that man wasn’t around, but still). Actually, Satoshi had never disappeared like this, due to the fact that he had always teased Kazunari (much to his wife’s annoyance) until Kazunari was totally awake and then they would eat breakfast together afterwards.

The breakfast part was impossible now, because Satoshi’s space beside his was already cold, and it told Kazunari that Satoshi had already left for quite some time. He frowned and rubbed his eyes, tried to get out of the bed (and tried really hard to not feel annoyed because he did not get his morning kiss). It was probably the first time he paid Satoshi’s room - no, it was also his own room now, wasn’t it? - enough attention to notice the decoration. It was apparent that Satoshi had decorated his room with his paintings (and to Kazunari’s embarrassment - though he was secretly gleeful about it - some of those were his own portrait), and it gave him a nice feeling when he was surrounded by these paintings. It felt just like Satoshi. Kazunari smiled subconsciously when his eyes spotted a canvas, in which Satoshi had painted them together - somewhere at the beach and they were looking at the sunset together (romantic, Kazunari had chuckled the first time he saw it) - but it was just made up from Satoshi’s imagination. Although Kazunari had told Satoshi that no way it could happen for real, now he kind of wanted to go there with Satoshi, to find out if it would feel as nice as Kazunari always thought it would be.

Half an hour had passed - maybe more - and Kazunari started to lose his patience. Where did Satoshi go? And how on Earth could he leave Kazunari alone here, a little lost of what to do next since their honeymoon had just ended (they had nearly a month of honeymoon, but of course, doing nothing, Kazunari remarked). He should attend to the conferences in which they would talk about the problems of their countries and find a solution for each, shouldn’t he? But he had never attended one, and even if he had wanted to, he needed Satoshi beside him. Kazunari groaned inwardly.

So he decided not to wait for Satoshi in their room anymore (he had waited for Satoshi long enough, Kazunari grunted disapprovingly) as he stood up from his bed and put on his clothes. When he was fully dressed and satisfied with his appearance, he turned the doorknob slowly. The door opened silently, revealing the deserted lobby (perhaps everyone had gone off for their daily duties, or they just simply didn’t dare to go close to the Prince’s room for they were scared what they might hear - Kazunari didn’t know). Kazunari stepped outside and tried his best not to make any sound, though he didn’t know why he had to do that.

Kazunari wandered around, and every time a servant caught his sight she or he always bowed deeply and hurriedly returned to their duties. No one stopped to talk to Kazunari and no one dared to look at him directly. This was making Kazunari bored. Where was this, a prison or something? He needed to talk to someone, for God’s sake, and no one dared to talk to him here!

“Kazunari-sama?”

He heard a familiar voice and immediately turned around, and though it wasn’t Satoshi, he was so glad to see Sho standing there, holding a pile of books with both hands and it was a little difficult to see his face from this angle.

“Sho-kun??” Kazunari sighed in relief, at least now he had someone he could talk to.

“Where are you going, Kazunari-sama?” Sho asked concernedly. And Kazunari burst out the first question that had been occupying his mind since morning.

“Where is Satoshi?”

“Huh?” Sho asked with a blink “Wasn’t he beside you this morning?”

Sho sounded surprised, and Kazunari could understand. Since the first day he came to this palace, there wasn’t a day he woke up without Satoshi. It was like a routine, and Kazunari hated it when someone broke his routine without asking for his permission (even though that one happened to be his husband. Really!)

“Then I guess he’s at his favorite place right now.”

“What favorite place?” Kazunari narrowed his eyes. He had never heard Satoshi mentioned about it before.

“His fishing lake,” Sho finished “He visits there sometimes in the morning, saying that it was the best time to catch fish. I think he misses going fishing,” Sho added when he saw Kazunari’s death glare.

“He left me and for a fish???!!!!” Kazunari growled, and he didn’t know where this anger came from, but it was annoying because since the first time they met, Satoshi had already claimed that Kazunari was as cute as fishes!

“Fishes,” Sho corrected, but Kazunari glared at him and he knew better than to continue talking.

“Where the hell is that place?” Kazunari asked, ignoring the look on Sho’s face when he used the inappropriate words.

“I’m sorry I can’t tell you,” Sho bowed, and Kazunari just became more irritated.

“Why??!!” He rolled his eyes in disbelief.

“He always prefers to be there alone,” Sho said apologetically “So I can’t reveal that place to you, you know…”

“But I’m his wife!!!!” Kazunari burst out, and when he realized it, he had already claimed that he was the wife. His face turned bright pink (he was pretty sure that Sho was laughing inwardly behind the neutral expression he had on his face). Kazunari wiped the embarrassment away by frowning deeply. “I have the right to know where it is, right??”

“I’m afraid not,” Sho still said politely with a bow “because I only receive orders from Prince Satoshi, and he tells me not to tell anyone, so I’m really sorry, Kazunari-sama…”

“What the hell!!!!” Kazunari cursed, and he ignored Sho’s look again “I’m going to kill him, that man, I’ll definitely kill him when I see him again…”

“You can’t kill your husband, Kazunari-sama, it could be listed at the worst crime ever…”

“I don’t care!!!!” Kazunari snapped and stormed away, not letting Sho say anything more as he knew he couldn’t get an answer from this man’s mouth.

--------------------------------

Kazunari didn’t know how many hours he had been pacing back and forth in their room - he had finished his breakfast alone, took a shower alone, and wandered around the castle alone (no, he wasn’t looking for that stupid fishing place of that stupid sleepy man, never), and when he found nothing interesting and started to feel bored again, he returned to their room (he wasn’t hoping for Satoshi to show up in their room either). And now he was just waiting, waiting and waiting - how much he hated waiting for that man! He was tired of it already. He didn’t want to be the one who was left behind all the time and didn’t know what was going on - what would a partner be if not being the one who you could tell everything about yourself? Someone that you could trust and be trusted back?

When he heard soft knocks on the door, Kazunari nearly jumped to his feet and his heart was pounding so painfully that it was hard to breathe. But when Sho entered the room with a bow, Kazunari’s heart fell and his cold expression was there again on his face and he didn’t even bother to cover it.

“Kazunari-sama, it’s lunch time already,” Sho said. Kazunari arched his eyebrow.

“Don’t be so polite with me, Sho-kun,” Kazunari sighed “You know how much I hate it when people are too formal towards me.”

“I know, but…” Sho hesitated, and Kazunari waved his hand. He was tired already.

“Just call me what you used to call me. Prince Kazu, or Kazu is okay.”

“Prince Kazu,” Sho decided after a while of hesitance “It’s lunch time, so do you want to have lunch here or in the dining room?”

“Where is Satoshi? I want to eat lunch with him,” Kazunari rolled his eyes at Sho.

“I’m afraid he’s out of reach right now,” Sho said, a little unsure “He would usually not come back before dinner once he goes out fishing.”

Kazunari couldn’t stop the disappointment rising in his chest when he heard those words - he was too tired to yell again, so he just let himself fall onto the bed with his face buried into his pillow.

“I won’t eat, then,” He said to Sho, who looked terrified, knowing that he had just pissed the prince off again “You can leave. I want to be alone.”

“But prince Kazu…” Sho started, but Kazunari already closed his eyes and turned away, refusing to look at Sho. He had lost his appetite to eat right now. He wanted to sleep, because he didn’t want to think about Satoshi anymore - like How the hell could he leave me like this? And Who am I to him? And Why can’t I go with him when I’m his wife? And Does he really love me? The last question was the most annoying one so Kazunari wiped it away violently and let himself sink into a light sleep, in which many different pieces of color intermixed, making his dream chaotic. And it wasn’t peaceful at all.

------------------

He woke up in the late afternoon, when his stomach growled in protest and his limps were numb. He didn’t know how long he had been sleeping, but it must’ve been quite some time, since the last rays of sunlight was already gone and the room was dark. He rubbed his eyes and sat up, looking around slightly confused, and then he realized something.

Apparently, Satoshi hadn’t returned yet.

He climbed out of bed, his feet felt strange when they touched the cold floor. He needed to take a breath before standing up, feeling exhausted all over without reason - he had spent nearly all day sleeping and therefore should be more energetic, shouldn’t he?

The door creaked open again and Kazunari no longer felt surprised when it was Sho again, though he couldn’t stop his heart from pounding in hope. When Sho bowed and insisted Kazunari have his dinner, he sighed and knew that if he didn’t, Sho would be in trouble and more importantly, he wouldn’t be able to bear the hunger. He didn’t want to starve to death, especially when he still hadn’t taught Satoshi a lesson for treating him like that.

So he followed Sho with a most grumpy expression on his face, and as if Sho had sensed it too, he didn’t dare to ask anything more, just led the way to the dinning hall and served Kazunari his meal, which Kazunari stared at it with a hard expression on his face.

“What is this?” Kazunari asked, his eyes rolling at Sho and he was clearly mad. Not at Sho, but more likely at his dish. “I don’t want this!!! Give me another one!!!”

“But prince Kazu, you said that you like to eat fish…” Sho hesitated.

“I don’t like it anymore!!! Take it away!!!” Kazunari snapped, and when he saw Sho’s confused look, he glared at the man “Are you going to do it or not??!!!”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Sho mumbled as he gestured for the other servants to do as Kazunari demanded. They looked perplexed too, but no one dared to ask as they all felt the heat from Kazunari, who was obviously upset because of his husband’s absence.

And then he finished the rest of his meal in silence after insisted that he loved meat and he would never ever want any fish in his meal from now on.

“Thanks for the meal,” He mumbled before standing up and returning to his room, feeling nauseous as he had eaten too much - it wasn’t like he wanted to, but he just didn’t feel like going back to that large-and-oddly-unpleasant-room alone, so he just kept eating and eating until his stomach wasn’t able to take in anything anymore.

And he remarked in his mind, he would make Satoshi pay for this later.

Seriously.

-----------------------------

He didn’t sleep after that, no matter how much he wanted to. He lay on his bed, and rolled onto his side and then onto his back again, his hand put under his head and he stared at the ceiling. He wasn’t even aware of the fact that he was waiting again, until the door slowly opened and this time, the person he had been yearning to see for the whole day appeared, looking tired but obviously happy.

Satoshi tried to not make any sound as he went to the wardrobe to change his clothes, and Kazunari didn’t move from his spot, closing his eyes as if he was sleeping. He wasn’t in the mood to talk to Satoshi right now.

He still had to punish this man, right?

So when Satoshi climbed onto the bed and slipped under their blanket, his arm came to rest at Kazunari’s waist gently - Kazunari hated to admit that, but just that simple touch made his whole body shiver and he felt like he could lose his mind at any time and forgive Satoshi already, just to have more of those touches. But he stopped himself. He patted the man’s hand away violently - harsher than he thought, but still - and shifted away, creating a clear gap between them, letting Satoshi know that he was really, really, really angry at him.

“Kazu,” Satoshi called softly, but he didn’t move closer - which Kazunari found annoying - and he just simply lay on his stomach with his arms rest under his chin and continued “Sho said you skipped your lunch today.”

Kazunari mumbled incoherently, and pretended to be asleep, but Satoshi wouldn’t buy it. His hand came to Kazunari’s nape as he stroked the hair there teasingly, and Kazunari squirmed. It was ticklish.

“And you refused to eat your favorite meal at dinner too,” Satoshi stated, still with his calm and warm voice. Kazunari grunted under his breath, and Satoshi’s fingers were still doing funny things to the back of his neck.

“Like it’s not your fault.”

“Oh,” Satoshi smiled, and he knew he had won when finally Kazunari was talking to him again. He moved closer to the younger man, but he carefully didn’t let their bodies touch. Kazunari would be as scary as a tiger if he really wanted to. “So it’s my fault?”

Kazunari didn’t answer. He kept turning his back at Satoshi and once again kept his mouth shut. Satoshi sighed.

“Kazu, I just missed fishing, okay? And I…”

“Why didn’t you just tell me?” Kazunari cut him off, his throat gone dry.

“Eh?” Satoshi arched his eyes, confused.

“Why the hell did you leave and not even tell me anything? When I woke up and saw no one beside me… When I was looking for you, they just told me that I couldn’t because you hated company when you were fishing!! And then, you didn’t show up even though I skipped my meal, didn’t show up at dinner, just came back only when it’s late at night!!!! Now you’re telling me that it’s not your fault???”

Kazunari wasn’t really expecting the suffocating embrace from Satoshi when he was still expressing his anger, so he was startled when he found Satoshi’s breath near his neck with his strong arms wrapping protectively around his body. His anger somehow subsided and he immediately relaxed, though he hated that. He hated those little actions Satoshi did to make his heart became weak. It was tiring enough when he waited for this man the whole day with those questions repeated over and over again in his mind.

“I’m sorry,” Satoshi mumbled. And that wasn’t what Kazunari wanted to hear “I’m sorry. You must’ve been so lonely.”

“I was not, hell, I was just…” Kazunari tried to struggle half-heartedly, and finally gave up - as usual - because he could never fight against the need to feel Satoshi around him like this. His voice lowered as he admitted, “I was just… worried.”

“What were you worried about?” Satoshi asked, still refuseing to loosen his arms.

Kazunari didn’t answer. He didn’t really know exactly what he was worried about, because Satoshi was his husband and it was stupid to feel it this way, since Satoshi always said that he loved Kazunari. But he was worried that Satoshi would stop loving him someday. He was worried that this was just a momentary love, and it would end soon. It was just an insecure feeling and Kazunari hated it.

“Kazu,” Satoshi called him coaxingly “Kazunari.”

When he got no reply from his wife, he leaned in and kissed Kazunari’s nape and felt the younger man shiver under the kiss.

“I won’t do that again,” Satoshi said softly “I promise.”

“It’s not you going fishing that makes me mad,” Kazunari bit his lips. “It’s you not telling me anything that…”

“I’m sorry.”

“I don’t want you to say sorry,” Kazunari sighed “I just… it’s frustrating, okay? When I’m not allowed to see you when I really want to, it’s frustrating.”

“But you’re allowed to.” Satoshi answered, a little surprised.

“Sho-kun didn’t let me,” Kazunari said bitterly “Saying that you don’t want any company when you’re fishing, and even I am not allowed to accompany you.”

“Oh,” Satoshi replied “I forgot to tell Sho that you’re welcomed anywhere in this castle.”

“So it’s all your fault!!” Kazunari snapped as he pushed Satoshi away “Go play with your fishes, old man!!!”

“Kazu,” Satoshi looked like he was holding back his laughter “You’re jealous of the fishes again?”

“NO!!!!” Kazunari’s face couldn’t be redder as he rolled onto his side and this time, face-to-faced with Satoshi. “I hate you!”

“I know you don’t,” Satoshi just laughed as he kissed Kazunari’s forehead gently. “Kazu doesn’t hate me.”

“Oh, really?” Kazunari rolled his eyes, but it was hard since Satoshi was kissing his eyes again. “Old pervert and too-full-of-yourself-man!”

Satoshi just chuckled and kissed Kazunari’s cheeks. Kazunari gave in after debating with himself.

“Next time,” He said, barely audible, because now Satoshi’s hand had sneaked under his clothes and it was hard to concentrate on talking. “Take me with you.”

Satoshi stopped and looked at him in utter surprise, and then he grinned brightly as he pulled Kazunari into another rib-breaking embrace.

Because Kazunari knew now. He didn’t want any days when he would wake up without Satoshi beside him.

Not even one, he decided.
