My Cinderella Movie Critique

I saw the new Cinderella movie earlier today. It was okay, as movies go, but I didn't think that there was a whole lot of focus on the conflict of the story. It was mostly just the stupid stepsisters being cruel, sort-of useless life lessons, and fluffy, slightly less useless romantic scenes. Now, I'm normally a huge fan of fluffy, slightly useless romance, but this was a bit too much.
I'm also certain that about 95% of the people in that theater were just there to watch Frozen Fever, because there's no way that many people want to watch a remake of a movie whose plot they all memorized at five years of age.
In case you didn't know, Frozen Fever is a 10 minute long short film featuring Elsa and Anna, with Elsa trying to throw her sister the perfect birthday party, while sick with a cold that makes tiny snowmen appear whenever she sneezes (yeah, don't ask). About 8 and a half of the 10 minutes are taken up by a song, and about 15 seconds are devoted to a deliciously awful pun (Anna says that Elsa has a cold, to which Elsa replies, "I don't get colds. Besides, a cold never bothered me anyway."). Oh, and Elsa conjures up a fabulous new dress that made me look down at my combat boots and leggings with envy.
But that's getting off topic.
I spent about half of the movie sitting there like, "Okay, this is nice, but they've already gone through all of this; when are we gonna get some new information?" and the other half wondering if the fact that the evil stepmother is my favorite character says something about my being a horribly dark and angsty person (which I'm not, thank you very much).
In my opinion, Cinderella has been redone way too many times. It's overdone, and the producers should have at least changed the plot a little bit (for instance, giving Cinderella badass-looking short, curly brown hair and magically transforming her into a Puerto Rican; and yes, I know I'm biased, but that's the way I look, and we can't all be blonde-haired, blue-eyed, servant-girl-turned-princesses, now, can we?). The only things that were different were that we learned the prince's name (Kit), and Cinderella is fluent in French.
All in all, though, this was a good movie. My eight-year-old sister enjoyed it, anyway.
RATING: Three stars
