I did, finally -- a round loaf (albeit already sliced) of Italian bread I found at this little hole-in-the-wall international grocery the next town over. Only place open except for the convenience stores.
Not quite the same but it'll have to do. Oh well
I usually use round Italian or sourdough now. We used to used a marble round (rye/pumpernickel) when I lived up north. But in the south rye/pumpernickel are basically not a thing anywhere.
Do you have a bread machine? I use mine for pumpernickel, seedless rye,(hubs fav) and Challah all the time. I'm sorry you had to go to such lengths only to return empty handed.
Ah, thanks :) It'll be fine. It's just in the heat of the moment I tend to go all AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH, LOL.
No bread machine, unfortunately. My husband tries to stick to a mostly low-carb diet so I try not to have bread around more than necessary. Besides, if I had a bread machine I'd eat it all ;)
Gah! So sorry. When companies drop the ball it is infuriating.
Last Christmas I called Mellow Mushroom to see how late they were open Christmas Eve. They said 11. Our MM is in a cool location - an old Victorian house - so it's special to go there. We were going to eat there before Midnight Mass. So, at 9:00, starving, on Christmas Eve, my husband and I and the kids and grandparents roll up and they won't let us in. There are people inside, but they "stopped seating at 8:45." Even though THEY gave me the wrong info. I haven't been back since.
We drove all over town and found ONE place open - Waffle House. So that's where we ate our Christmas Eve dinner.
Once I got over being seriously irritated, it was quite fun, but in the moment, I was so pissed they gave me the wrong info when I called!
In the long run, I promise your pumpernickel won't break the joy of today!! What about a different bread bowl? Our grocery stores often have white mountain?
One year when they stopped making a particular type of pumpernickel (black forest rye, it was called) I subbed a crusty French round. You would've thought my extended family would've burned me at the stake :shudder: It seems hardly anybody makes the pumpernickel anymore, at least around my way, which is weird because there's always been some kind of version, whether it was Former Employer or What Was Current Employer, or even their competition.
But yeah, they need to get their act together. One thing has been constant in my line of work: If there's a policy change or something, EVERYBODY in the department knows about it so nobody gives out incorrect information. I just don't understand why that isn't common across the board.
Well, we've got round Italian bread. It'll have to do.
Trivia time! What you call white mountain bread is called Portuguese bread up here. Why that is, I don't know.
Lol! Maybe it's because we are in the foothills of the Appalachians? I hope everyone recovered from their initial horror and enjoyed their dip yesterday! I always make an asiago cheese dip in a. Read bowl for my family on Super Bowl Sunday. They ask every year if I'll be making the "super bowl of cheese."
HUGS! I, too, am dealing with adjusting a favorite holiday dish. I was thinking this morning, as I was chopping celery, that it was like I was on Top Chef, and they swapped out my essential ingredient at the last minute.
Ooh, we've got the Hawaiian rolls up here but not the bread.
The dip goes OK without pumpernickel, IMO. The pumpernickel, however, adds a certain bite to the dip that you don't get with white...or wheat...or cranberry pecan...
