Green Room - Week 25 - Day 2
Coming into work on the bus this morning I overheard one of those conversations that made me kind of cock my head to one side and stare blankly for a bit.
It was between two guys, they get off at the same stop so I don't know if they are co-workers, friends, or both. Maybe just two guys who ride the bus and get off at the same stop.
The first one was telling his friend about how he had gone to get pizza, but when he ordered they told him it was more than he expected. Because he, for some reason, thought he could get the sale price for a specific pizza on the one he was ordering. He told his buddy with a great deal of indignation about how he argued with the "stupid kid" behind the counter over the price. . . because he should be able to get his pizza for that price too!
Apparently the manager got involved but he still didn't get his way. . . I tuned out for awhile, trying to figure out what would make someone not understand what a "sale" is. . . and tuned back in as he was handing his cell phone to the friend telling him to "check out her pictures".
Over the next couple of minutes I quickly learned that they were pictures sent by a woman "in Russia", that he had "met on a website". He was "working on sending her the money so she could move to the US" to be with him.
In the meantime she's been sending him pictures of herself and talking online about their feelings for each other.
I tried not to stare, but I kind of felt like a dog looking at the space shuttle.
Is it possible this was legit? I guess.
But you hear about those sorts of scams all the time, I've just never seen anyone who was in the midst of one. Or a potential one. Maybe this woman really exists. Maybe they are truly meant for each other. I've got to say though that I was fairly surprised that he's not sending money to her uncle in Nigeria to pay the fees to help get his substantial inheritance. . .
