Yeah, no, I completely agree! I'm glad you did it! I figured I'd try to keep things light and let you do all the heavy lifting. ;D <3

Hey, I reached out to Fitz and Patrick. Fitz thinks the real issue is going to be the service. Sanctions are one thing, and that totally explains why none of us can charge new things (like icons or a paid journal, even), but Fitz thinks it's going to extend (and possibly in the shadows) deeper. The US has already said they'd choke Russia's access to US tech, so that could mean everything from side services they're offering (that make LJ work, if you know what I mean), to flat out restricting bandwidth. There are other countries who could help, but very few are willing to die on this hill with Putin.

So, Patrick pretty much agreed and said as far as shit sandwiches went, this was probably one of the worst he'd seen (we used to work the consulting side, so I remember eating a few of those, together, and if it's worse... it means it's ugly). *BUT* again, just like Fitz, he thought whatever would happen would be temporary (a relative term, of course! Temporary like standing in line to pee, or temporary like shutting down the world thanks to COVID, is anyone's guess). Neither believes that if something bad *does* happen (LJ is down/unavailable) that it means it's doomed. They both think there's too much money invested in it, and that at this point it's a cash cow (there's no code being built for it, anymore, everything is templated, data stores are established). Each boy thought there was too much on the table just to walk, you know? =D

That's the best I got for now, sugar, but if I hear more in the next few days or as things unfurl, I'll shoot it your way!

Thank you for checking with them.

I've been told that it is morally indefensible to stay. I've also been told that it would be a bad thing (they didn't say "morally indefensible" but they did indicate that it wouldn't be "the right thing") to leave and abandon the platform and give it up entirely to those trolls and propaganda accounts that have been popping up over the last few weeks.

Did they offer any advice about that angle?

Honestly, hon, I didn't ask. I'm pretty sure both would say that you gotta do what you feel is the right thing, you know? That's the really bad thing when you're working with a company that wants to move its services to another so they can "take advantage of that country's laws." That's never for the betterment of the people.

I know what I am! I'm a pirate. I've done things I certainly can't share in the open, so my moral compass is a little wobbly, anyway. But -- for me -- there's one thing in sticking it to the man, and there's quite another in raping and pillaging.

All's I'm saying is that I'm not sure I'd trust our compasses when making such a heavy decision (and I'll defend us a little here, by specifying that the stuff we've done has been for at least one of three reasons: to learn, to protect, or to inveigle the bad into the open), but if you want me to hit them up about it, I can!
