We have covered this, and I DO have hippies to kick. But I think it's a reasonable question.
My answer is that people come and go all the time. If someone left because they felt it was unfair, that would suck. Then again, anyone leaving for any reason sucks.
The ACTUAL integrity of a vote always matters. But as we've seen all around social media, the "appearance of" anything these days is wide open for all kinds of conspiracy theories. I work damn hard to try to make things as fair as possible. I know this, and I hope everyone else knows it as well.
The Top 10 question didn't come into play this year, because that was a Gatekeeper round. But I get the spirit of the question. I'd counter though that the same person might have the same feelings about "Why was I eliminated in a Gatekeeper round", because ultimately most people probably think that under slightly different circumstances, they could have, or should have won... and some of them are going to be correct.
But limiting things to community only, or even contestant only, is a death sentence for a community and only results in things being MORE biased. The people who tend to like it are people who would benefit from it because they know everyone. (Not saying you, because that's not what you are asking about specifically. I'm answering the follow up question. Because I've had this conversation enough times to know it. :D)
Anyone who has been here long enough knows that I fought hard against allowing other social media voting. I tried working with LJ admins to come up with a way to limit it. I've worked with the person who designed our customized poll to see if there was a way around it. There isn't. If LJ allows it, it's allowed.
All of that said - DW isn't open to all social media. Which is both good and bad. It means this question doesn't really come up during our special mini seasons over there. But it also limits growth and potential exposure. In some ways it's even further backwater than LJ is, which didn't seem possible. Our next mini season is going to be over there, so it is a chance to see how if growth IS possible in a dead space without outside influence being exerted on it.
"Is there any level at which you would be willing to sacrifice the potential of new writers for a present/past writers-only vote?"
Are you seriously asking me if I am willing to sacrifice people? ;) Have you been paying attention to that volcano? ;)
