Green Room - Week 28 - Day 4

The deadline is tomorrow: https://therealljidol.livejournal.com/1154837.html

so hopefully you have been busy writing your entries!

I've been asked to apply to be on the Diversity and Inclusion committee at my job.

Honestly, I think they misinterpreted my email - I let them know that they had left out an "Other" category for their "disabilities" section. (the closest they had was an "Other - prefer not to reveal", completely ignoring that there were other things that people would be fine with talking about, they just weren't listed)

So I let them know.

That was a couple weeks ago -and now I have an invite to be on the committee that is being set up.

On one hand- I'm probably one of the only stutterers in the company. Statistically speaking, there aren't a huge number of us. (and no, "I sometimes stutter when I get nervous" doesn't count. That's like saying "My leg went numb, so I know what it's like to not have "fully functioning" legs. Sorry, it's a digression, but also a pet peeve of mine)
So technically I'd be representing a group that usually remains under-represented in this kind of thing.

On the other hand, as a middle aged white cis-gendered straight man, do I really want to be taking up one of those spots? (there are 15)

I most definitely have the right to be on the committee. But do I have the responsibility to give that spot up (or not even try to get it) for someone else who also has the right to be there...

Is whatever I have to contribute enough to really justify it?

This is what is happening in my head right now - so I figured I'd throw it out into the world and see what others had to say...
