The phone is in his hand, and he's figuring out how he's going to...eh, the hard part is done. Spoon dials, and when the woman's voice on the other end of the phone answers,
"Witherspoon residence." he's ready,
"Hallo, mother, it's Ronald."
"Ronald? It's not Saturday...has something gone wrong?" His mother (not mum, but mother, yes, I've come that far.) sounds worried, fretful over him. It's ironic that they're closer now than they ever were when he was human...not that she knows he's not human.
"No, no, nothing is wrong, mother. I wanted to call, to let you and father know...I asked Ace to marry me. She said yes." (Did I sound like this when I told her about Helen? Is she going to weep over lost time?)
Mrs. Witherspoon, like her husband, is a collected, calm individual. The Witherspoon household was never cold, but it wasn't at all like the bright and loud Wells house. It is doubly bewildering, then, when his mother crows, "Yes!" before settling down again and saying, "We still need to meet her, Ronald. And your Cora."
"Yes, mother. I'll see what I can arrange."
He's grinning again, when he puts down the phone.
