Why does God let bad things happen to good people? The classic answer is that to give humanity free will, we must also have the free will to do bad things, even to each other. Thus, in the human context at least, that is why God allows bad things to happen.
Speaking more generally, I have a book called "When Bad Things Happen to Good People" by Rabbi Harold S. Kushner. I read it after I had a miscarriage. It was saying that it is not that God that lets these things happen, rather He is there to support us when they do. I didn't actually read all the way to the back cover, and I'm not sure where I put the book, but if I find it I will be happy to lend it to you.
If the child becomes a percussionist, will you disown it? Hang on, I'm confused. You said "child", thus inferring a human being, then you go on to talk about a percussionist!
If someone gave you a dollar, would you name the baby Cat? My husband and I are not open to bribery or corruption. I went to a book of baby names and wrote down all the names which I could possibly consider. Then Allen went through the list and put two ticks next to Catherine, and one tick next to Melissa. So yes someone could give us a dollar, and the child could be called "Cat" short for Catherine, but the two events would not be in any way connected.
Update: my husband just came into the room and read my reply over my shoulder. He said we would need a lot more bribery and corruption than just a dollar. "That's an insult!"
