A Big Ol' Update

Mar 22, 2007 15:26

This update is a couple of days late (sorry!), but the week has been nuts so far. Actually, a real update is considerably overdue. There's been plenty of stuff going on; I've just been too slack busy to sit down and write about it!

At any rate, we on Team Two got our collective acts in gear and pulled out a big win Monday night. The 18-11 final (3-3, 2 runs) is a touch misleading because we were up 18-6 heading into the latter half of the final inning, but a win's a win and it did well for our confidence. Plus, it's just a whole lot more fun when everything's clicking and going well. We were loose and enjoying the evening (most of us, anyway) and the team spirit was flowing freely (for most of us, anyway...).

* still working on humility

That whole day was pretty good, save the enormous pile of work I had from being out Friday ahead of the retreat (more on that later). I had my first ever radio interview Monday afternoon. It went very well and was a lot of fun. "G.T." on Kiss 98.5 FM here in town had me on to discuss what's going on here at the Philharmonic and then we discussed misconceptions about the Phil (there are several). My first newspaper interview was roughly about the same topic, so methinks I have a lot of work ahead of me in terms of educating people about what we do here.

I thought I'd blogged about it, but I see I didn't: 8 March was my one-year anniversary at the Phil and it's been a great year. I really enjoy this job and, after all the difficulty I had in finding it, I'm even more grateful that I've got it. The people are great, what I do is fun and I genuinely do care about our little non-profit arts organization's welfare and mission. We do good things for good reasons and that means a lot to me. My annual performance review is coming next week, so here's hoping that goes well.

Speaking of going well, there can be few people having things going as well as Jared right about now. He's doing a barnstorming tour of spring training games down in Florida right now and has seen several teams in different places, gotten lots of autographs and in general made me insanely jealous. He chatted up Pirates manager Jim Tracy and even got MY BOY Jason Bay to sign a ball for me. Score! The Nickelback concert he took Allison to was great and had two of my favorite bands as openers: Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace. Seriously, Jared, stop this. You're killing me here.

Three Days Grace played the Five Points St. Patrick's Day festival this year and I was none too happy that it fell on the weekend of the retreat in Gatlinburg, Tenn. with the Shandon Young Singles.

That there's a picture of my bus the morning of departure. I hated the chance to miss 3DG, but we had a blast up there and I got much more out of this retreat than the previous one. It was well worth it, plus I was able to a) co-lead a group with Betty Rubble Lauren and b) buy more ties.

We stayed at some amazing cabins with amazing views of the surrounding (snow-capped) mountains. Our cabin was definitely a male paradise: pool table, a fo' real theater (which made for a nice, pinball and Pac-Man machines, a poker table, bar and TV's everywhere ... exceptional lodging. My bus, Rhombus, had a ton of fun and I got to work on my Bobcat Goldthwaite voice (resulting in a sore throat) and make several off-color jokes. A real cracker of a weekend if you ask me!

After accidentally deleting the 1,400 songs that were in my iPod earlier in the year, I finally got them replaced right before the trip. It includes Mix XIX, the latest in my mixes line.

1) "Come As You Are" - Nirvana
2) "Lose Yourself" - Eminem
3) "Cannonball" - The Breeders
4) "No Rain" - Blind Melon
5) "Two Princes" - Spin Doctors (went on an early '90s alt. rock kick)
6) "Steady As She Goes" - The Raconteurs
7) "Spaceship" - Angie Aparo
8) "Memphis City Rain" - ibid.
9) "You Know My Name" - Chris Cornell (one of the best Bond themes of the lot)
10) "Fight Like This" - Decypher Down
11) "Breath" - Breaking Benjamin
12) "Santa Monica" - Theory of a Deadman
13) "No Surprise" - ibid.
14) "Poem" - Taproot
15) "Ruby" - Kaiser Chiefs

That's enough for me today ... you'll hear from me again after next Monday's softball game, if not before.

nickelback, shandon ysa, softball, pittsburgh pirates, scpo
