The night sky was darker than usual, with clouds covering the winter stars and moon. The only source of light was from the street lamps. After a long day of playing winter games with the others in our club, Satoko and I were worn out and thankful we hadn't had to suffer the loser's punishment, unlike Keiichi.
Snow crunched under our feet as we made our way back home. I never had to be afraid of walking home at night since Satoko was always with me, one of the perks of sharing your house with your best friend. At least, I hadn't needed to be afraid for some time now.
Four years ago, I never thought I'd live to see the snow. During that never ending June, I thought I'd never be able to grow older and enjoy simple little pleasures such as these. But, I think all the pain we went through was worth it, just for this one moment with you.
"Well, I'm glad I was worth it." I flushed and put my hand against my mouth, realizing that I had just said all that out loud.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to say that."
Satoko just laughed and sidled up closer to me. Putting her arms around my shoulders, she leaned her head against me. Her hair smelled like pine trees.
"That's okay," she whispered. "It just worries me when you talk like that. You look so sad when you do." She looked up at me, carnation colored eyes sparkling with concern. I placed a hand over hers and smiled.
"Don't be worried. I can't help but think of the past. It's out of the norm for me to be living in a forward moving time."
Satoko slowly smiled back at me. Just as she leaned up to kiss my cheek, it began to snow. Under the beam of the street lamp, we watched as the small falls cascaded down from the sky. Satoko and I stayed like that for a while, just holding each other.
"Well, you have your whole lifetime to get used to it," Satoko said finally. I glanced at her, eyebrow cocked in puzzlement.
"You have the rest of your life to get used to living," she explained. "And I'll always be right here with you."
I stared at her for a moment and my face grew warm with the happiness I felt. I soon smiled back and pulled her into a tighter embrace.
"Thank you, Satoko."
"Anything for you, Rika."
It was just one winter out of many to come for us to enjoy together.
