Title: Buy One Get One Free
Genre: General/Romance
Rating: PG
Pairing: Ontae
A/N: About 3000 words long.
A look at the glossy slip of paper in his hand, a lick of the lips and a tiny grin; Jinki wants ice cream and even better is a coupon offering an extra serving. In its bold red letters, the classic offer, buy one ice cream sundae and get the second one free. There is the small print of course, the restrictions stating only one coupon per customer and the expiry date, which happens to be tomorrow. A huff from pouting lips and Jinki rolls over in his bed, clutching his trusty pig pillow while staring at the enticing deal in his hands.
Jinki has never liked to miss such chances, although sometimes he never has a choice in the matter with his line of work. As one knows, being famous means squealing stalkers with gigantic high tech cameras, and sometimes, even if Jinki appreciates their love, these girls are not always the best companions when trying to sneak a frozen treat from the local McDonalds. So the big question is whether Jinki would like to stay home all day on his rare day off: losing to Minho in videogames straight through the evening, listening to Kibum nag to him about his poor choices in casual clothing, or helping Jonghyun take the cheese out of overly romantic lyrics.
All the options sound tempting but of course the choice is obvious as Jinki grins, feeling a weight drop by his side, a slim hand intertwining with his. Jinki turns to face bright blinking brown eyes and he cannot help but laugh, handing Taemin his coupon. The dancer scans it quickly, and Jinki catches a twinkle in Taemin’s eyes before the boy grins and lifts himself off the bed, handing back the slip of paper.
Taemin reaches the bedroom door, and without looking back, the message is clear.
“We’re going out so get ready in five minutes.”
Jinki scrambles off the bed, sheets crumpling beneath him as he reaches for his dark grey hoodie on a nearby chair. Alone time with Taemin is something that Jinki does not object to because for one, he does not feel the need to act cool, and two, this means Jinki can goof off all he likes. That is why he dare not be late when given a time limit, and Jinki finishes up by placing the hood over his head, along with an overly large white wool scarf around his neck and face. The scarf technically belongs to Taemin, but Jinki does not think the boy minds as going out means hiding their identities as much as possible, being stealthy and conspicuous.
Or at least that is what Jinki thinks going out means as he hobbles to the front door, trying to pull on a pair of pink and black Nike sneakers. His thoughts are proven wrong as Jinki’s mouth falls agape upon seeing Taemin, the boy grinning, clad in the most obnoxious hoodie ever: blue, red, yellow and black zebra stripes. It’s one of their designer stage outfits, and not exactly Jinki’s definition of fade into the back disguises.
“Aren’t we supposed to kind of not draw attention to us?” asks Jinki with stunned eyes, finally stable on his two feet in a pair of shoes.
Taemin smiles sweetly before tying a white surgical mask around his face and pulling a black toque over his head. The dancer then proceeds to tug at the sleeve of Jinki’s sweater, shaking his head. “You should wear your red and black sweater hyung, or at least something more stylish,” states Taemin while tying up his black runners with one hand, “Otherwise you might regret it.”
Jinki opens his mouth to refute Taemin’s suggestion; however he is quickly shushed as a cold finger presses firmly against his lips. Baffled, Jinki does not utter a sound as the boy with auburn locks looks to a large black watch, shaking his head in disappointment.
“Sorry hyung,” apologizes Taemin, either oblivious or completely indifferent to Jinki’s perplexed expression, “But the five minutes are up. You won’t have time to get changed.”
Just like that, Taemin grasps Jinki’s wrist and the pair slip out the front door, running down the stairs, their destination the local McDonalds only four blocks away. On the way past the quiet street of the suburbs, they chat and joke about the usual things: how Minho desperately needs a haircut, how Jonghyun coddles his dog as if it were the new Yoogeun, and how being Kibum’s test tasters has been both horrifying and gratifying on their hungry stomachs.
Taemin grumbles about how thanks to Kibum he has gained so much weight, and Jinki chimes in with a joke about Taemin actually looking human now. A few slaps are thrown, along with many laughs and this is exactly the way Jinki likes it. There is no awkwardness at all, at least until they reach the somewhat populated area just outside of the numerous apartment buildings, and suddenly both Jinki and Taemin fall silent. This is where danger lies, or so Jinki likes to tell himself, the adrenaline rush of not getting caught a surge in his circulation.
The pair are just a block away from the building with a giant M planted on top when a glancing touch is felt against the back of Jinki’s hand. The leader looks to Taemin who Jinki can just imagine is grinning beneath the white paper mask. Taemin then proceeds to withdraw a slip of paper from his pocket, and Jinki’s eyes widen instantly upon recognition, a second coupon.
“Let’s get four sundaes hyung.”
“But why-I-” Jinki struggles to find the right words for this ridiculous plan. “The coupons only say one per customer!”
Taemin looks up from beneath his hood, arching a brow as he points between him and Jinki.
“I count two people hyung,” explains Taemin, a mischievous glint in his eyes, “Therefore there are two customers, no?”
Jinki gapes for a second before logical reasoning can hit him again.
“But we came together,” hisses the leader, clearly becoming flustered, “That’s like one set of customers - or something. And, isn’t this kind of being cheap and - breaking the rules?”
Jinki dies inside as he watches the dancer plant pale fingers on slender hips and Taemin rolls his eyes.
“Hyung you are such a square sometimes,” Taemin comments with a matching box outline gesture, and then proceeds to pull Jinki forward and towards the fast food business. “Technically we are not breaking any rules and I am sure this internationally renowned restaurant can afford to give us two extra servings. If it helps, I’ll stand a few spots behind you so the cashier doesn’t know we are together okay?”
The suggestion does not offer any comfort to Jinki as he is pulled along by the younger man.
“It’s still being cheap!”
Taemin does not reply to his protest and Jinki’s feeble attempts at being a man of honour fall dead. Jinki struggles instead with the dread piling inside as he is pushed through the front door, Taemin urging him to line up first. A few cautious steps into the building and all signs are good, a family in one corner, a group of construction workers occupying the center tables and a few students snacking beside the windows. There are not that many customers and Jinki takes a deep breath before stepping towards the cashier, a completely disinterested looking female, chewing gum rather obnoxiously.
Rummaging through his pockets, Jinki withdraws his coupon and gulps, handing it forward to the young woman without a word. A broad and completely fake smile crosses her features, and she takes the slip from him, ending with a sweet, “Anything else sir?”
Jinki shakes his head, takes out his money and finishes the task as quickly as possible, receiving his change and bowing instead of saying thank you. It feels ten degrees too warm as Jinki backs stiffly away from the register, the cashier giving him one suspicious look before focusing on the next customer. It’s not that Jinki wishes to intentionally act like a weirdo, but he has learned that to speak with his own voice risks recognition from fans. There are only a few people young enough in the place to possibly recognize him, but Jinki figures it is better to avoid any chance of being caught at all costs.
Which is why, when Jinki finally receives his tray with two sundaes that dread bubbles within him yet again and he holds back a panicked sob. The minor detail that was forgotten quickly returns as Jinki hears squeals from the group of students behind him, provoked from a very stylish boy heading towards the register with loud brightly coloured designer clothing. Jinki swears that he is going to give Taemin a huge speech about the importance of stealth as a celebrity-
Tomorrow.
A glance is thrown his way from the rather conspicuous boy, telling Jinki to hurry up and find a seat. Only then Jinki realizes how ridiculous he must look, clad in his frumpy clothing just staring at the register despite holding his order. The tofu leader blushes, glad to have his cheeks shielded by the wool scarf, and opts to find a seat in a quiet corner of the restaurant. Jinki can still feel his heart beating from the surge of excitement of the risk of being in public, and he tries to distract himself as he stares out the window. However the task proves difficult, to ignore the whispers of the students across the room who are conjuring up theories about ‘the skinny boy with expensive clothing.’
And of course, this attention can only be drawn to himself as Jinki watches Taemin walk with a light step towards his table. There are disappointed sighs and whispers from the students who turn their gaze away, making Jinki nearly wince as he can already guess that the disappointment originates from the thought of ‘such a waste, the cool guy hanging out with the loser.’ A thick swallow and Jinki sighs recalling his high school life, and honestly it almost ruins Jinki’s appetite as he slouches in his seat.
Taemin takes the seat across from him and the two turn towards the wall, a meager attempt at hiding their faces from being caught. Jinki observes silently as the boy pulls down the surgical mask to his chin, a bitter smile on Taemin’s lips as he glares hotly at the trays before them. He can only guess why, and Jinki shuffles forward, placing a cautious hand over Taemin’s.
“High school will be over for you in a year Taemin,” reassures Jinki, a gentle warmth muted in his voice, believing the boy is upset at seeing the gossiping teens. “Just one more year.”
“Hyung, I told you I can deal with it, but that isn’t important now.”
Taemin’s brows furrow together leaving Jinki baffled as the dancer seems to focus on their four ice cream treats.
“You ordered two chocolate sundaes hyung.”
It’s almost an angry reprimand, which catches Jinki off guard.
“But your favourite is chocolate isn’t it Taemin?”
“And your favourite is strawberry.”
Taemin heaves a heavy breath and leans back into his bench as his hat falls over his eyes, the classic pucker of a pout on his lips. The boy crosses his arms and Jinki nervously peeks from his scarf, almost hiding his face completely beneath the white material.
“You never think of yourself do you hyung?” Taemin reaches an arm out, tapping a plastic spoon on the bridge of Jinki’s nose. “I’m glad I thought of ordering two strawberry sundaes.”
Jinki bites his lips, a fluttering of heat in his chest as he grabs the spoon, stopping it from assaulting his face. Too dense to notice, he finally sees Taemin’s tray, the two cups of white ice cream drenched in red syrup and berries.
“You really didn’t have to,” comments Jinki, although his actions contradict his words as he hastily reaches over to the younger man’s side of the table, a cold strawberry soft serve in his hands. With warmth in his cheeks, Jinki pulls down his scarf and digs in. The first bite he takes is as expected, too large and Jinki shivers as his nose goes numb and his forehead fills with cold. But in the end, the desert tastes deliciously sweet and Jinki almost squeals in delight.
Taemin grins, eyes growing smaller and also reaches over, diving into a chocolate mess of syrup and cream. The pair stare at each other, like kids no possibly older than twelve, grinning from ear to ear as the jolt of sugar reaches them. One spoonful after the other, and to no one’s surprise, Jinki finishes first, his plastic cup clean and empty. Taemin rolls his eyes and pushes the older man the second sundae.
“See?” muses Taemin licking the back of his plastic spoon with a sly look that Jinki fails to ignore, “My idea of getting four sundaes was good right hyung?”
And Jinki would have agreed quickly, already halfway through his second desert, but instead he holds himself back from gaping as Taemin reaches over for the last sundae, fingers creeping along the table. The dancer smiles innocently, taking a first bite then sucking on the sweet remnants, and Jinki swallows, knowing exactly what kind of game Taemin is playing at. The flick of a pink tongue, white cream on red lips and a stare from black eyes unwaveringly directed at him.
A smack of the lips that startles Jinki and Taemin laughs, a smirk on his face earned.
“So I was right hyung?”
Jinki nods dumbly, his ice cream now melted and pooled at the bottom of the cup. But that is the least of his concerns as Jinki props his elbows on the table, leaning towards the younger man, cheeks flushed but gaze determined. His hand touches the smaller one and Jinki’s heart almost jumps with glee as he feels Taemin tense nervously for once, no longer the know-it-all teenager.
“I think we should take the long way home Taemin-ah.” A soft and low whisper along with the action of a gentle squeeze of the hand.
Taemin flushes red, his mouth opening to a small “o”-
Squeals, an onslaught of flashes and clicks, and both Taemin and Jinki jump out of their seats, parting from each other. Taemin hastily ties up his mask, and Jinki pulls his scarf over his mouth, both automatic reactions. Yet these attempts at discretion are useless as the pair realize that they are slowly being surrounded by the group of students and additional lackeys called onto the scene. The employees of the beloved restaurant chain have also whipped out cell phones, and Jinki can feel nothing but heat rushing to his cheeks as he cracks one of his classic forced celebrity smiles.
It’s only due to a swift jab to his side, Jinki squeaks and looks at Taemin, common sense kicking in as he realizes his protective smile cannot even be seen by onlookers in the first place. While in his daze, Taemin promptly grabs Jinki’s hand, pulling him and walking past people that lean far too close into their personal space.
“Run.”
One soft command from the younger man and the pair dash off, back down the path they came and towards their dormitory. They barely escape the rush of feet behind them and despite all the panic that ensues, Jinki’s beating heart from the rush of adrenaline accompanied by a sugar high, he is smiling wide, laughing in fact. And he can hear the echo, the echo of Taemin’s laughter behind his as they dash up the stairs, hands still intertwined as they open the door to their home, safe from snapping cameras and intruding eyes.
“I told you hyung!”A breathless laugh of relief from the boyish voice. “Wearing that ugly sweater made us stick out like a sore thumb. If you just dressed nicer, people would have just written us off as hipsters or something- Mmph!”
Jinki grins wide as he silences the younger man’s, pushing the boy into the door as he pins their intertwined hands against the wall. A sticky kiss laced with sweetness, Jinki sliding his tongue against Taemin’s bottom lip, the boy finally clicking onto the situation and returning the childish smile before parting his pink lips.
Strawberries and chocolates, never a bad combination.
“You’re stupid hyung.” Taemin jokes between chaste kisses, remembering to lick his lips after each taste of Jinki’s tongue. “Utterly and completely stupid.”
“Well we’re both fools right?” Jinki retorts, silly smile still not wiped from his mouth as his hands fall on Taemin’s hips.
The boy reaches up, hands falling behind Jinki’s neck as he nods.
“Complete and utter fools.”
“Shining idols, cheaper than you think.”
The shrill voice reprimands them and Jinki and Taemin share a small secretive smile before feigning petrified stares at the wrath of Kim Kibum.
“Did you guys have to be pigs and order four sundaes?” Kibum is howling above themas they sit on the living room couch, watching the upset man pace back and forth. Kibum slaps the back of his hand against a newspaper in hand as he traces the headline once again. “And couldn’t you two have been a little more conspicuous? I mean look at these pictures!”
Jinki and Taemin turn to each other before facing Kibum innocently.
“Kibum-ah,” Jinki begins to explain, “It was the last day to use the coupons.”
“That’s right hyung!” Taemin chirps in. “It was a deal that shouldn’t be wasted.”
The sharp eyes widen and Kibum throws his hands in the air, making a show of frustration as the other four members watch him, two looking rather innocent and the other two holding back laughter.
“I don’t know what to do with you guys.” Kibum declares, placing a hand over his brows as they knit close together in exasperation. “But hyung, stop teaching Taeminnie all your bad habits.” A threatening glare and Kibum storms out of the room, with a cackling Jonghyun following behind.
Minho however remains in the room, casting a slow grin at the naughty pair.
“Have fun at least you guys?”
Taemin and Jinki lean forward, jubilation springing from their eyes.
“Of course!”
