On Change.

Isn't it crazy how life moves? It constantly flows around us, a persistant current that carries us to some unknown destination. Love it or hate it, it cannot be stopped.

I suppose this thought process goes back a couple of days, when I came across a picture of my second grade class in a friend's Facebook profile. Looking at it, I saw names and faces that I haven't thought of in years. Recalling these people, I felt compelled to track a few of them down on Facebook to see what has become of them. Needless to say, I was a little shocked to see where some of them wound up, and who they have become. These people, who, in my mind, remained the young kids that I knew them as, have grown up. They have become independent adults, just as I have. They've been in the same current that we are all in.

I guess that it is a universal truth of life that time changes us all. It carries us to different places, and makes us different people in the process. If you close your eyes for a minute or two, the person that you knew will be changed, and further away. It is a natural occurance, and one that cannot be stopped. However, it is always difficult to realize that things can never be as they once were. To realize that those kids that defined my childhood have all grown up, that they have all become different people, is hard to do. The memories that preserve them in such a state are all that do so. Those people, the symbols of childhood and innocence, no longer define those qualities. I no longer hold those qualities. We have all changed, and grown apart.

In this, I feel that it is important to retain all that surrounds you. It is important to live life to the fullest while you can, because, in the end, we will all become different people, and the memories that we create will be all that remain of the present. We must welcome change, but never forget who we were.
