my try on explaining part 1orenji_kisekiNovember 2 2010, 14:25:17 UTC
can I ask you... why do you consider this boy so smart in the first place? XD;; and cunning? where was he ever cunning? all he ever did was planning a revenge against the people that didn't even deserve it from him specificaly. He was simply a petty idiot xD; (well, one charming idiot though~~)
and let me point out an important detail: Honma never researched the people all alone. We can see in one episode Yoda-san telling Honma: "the other contestants are being deeply researched right now. Everything should go as planned" so he said. And what does that mean? that the whole researching was done by some other people (maybe by private detectives or whatever, of course paid by the Honma's father's company - meaning Ginga TV - money). Sure, Honma collected all the information about the incident from newspapers, because he became obssesed with this since he saw Saejima's report in tv, but really... it was what gave him his idea (along with Yamanobe-san's influence, because without this fellow, Honma would most probably never get the idea of revenge in the form of tv show. he actually was more than a copycat than an idea inventor^^;), all the researching certainly wasn't done by him. But he sure knew how to use it in the form we had seen through the series and that is his credit. Second thing... did you ever considered his character? like, how was he before all the accident happened? From what we can see from the flashbacks, Honma is actually kind of carefree person. And kind, though he was definitely petty even back then (that would explain why he got to hate his best friend. And sure, he did consider him his best friend, you wouldn't talk about your worries to someone you only hate to the core). So, he was carefree. He probably forgot about the tape recorder as soon as he saw Kamiyama falling down. And if you ask me, it's most probably Yoda-san that thought about covering up the whole incident, as to not bring shame to Ginga tv and Honma's father. But that's just my guess based on logic.
As for the letter... I was thinking about it as well. Why Yoda-san said that the letter left was from Misaki to Kamiyama? But then I remembered their little plan, that Misaki will write the letter and Kamiyama will help her give it to Honma. I guess this shyness complicated the thing about who's the receiver. Well, it's just my guess, from seeing how these kids acted.
By the way, Honma isn't insane in any literal sense ^^; by psychological terms, it's closer to repressing your bad memories, just like Kamiyama said, so that you can live further. The whole incident seemed to be too much for him to bear, for the whole six years we only got three flashbacks, we can only guess how heavy burden it was on him. But then Kamiyama awoke and it turned out he lost his memories. If he wouldn't fall trying to stop Honma, it would have never happened. A new burden was added: the guilt of his best friend new condition. And it probably was too much and he finally crushed. And repression of his memories occured, to spare him of the heavy guilt at last. And now it could happen, because they were the only ones, he and Kamiyama, who knew the truth.
Or not exactly... Kamiyama, Honma.... and well, Yoda-san. Which makes him the only hope, but he failed. He probably loved Honma too much and after seeing him suffering for this six years and finally crushing, he thought it might all be better, as long as Honma is alive. because, hey, I'm sure suicide thoughts never truly left Honma, as we can see by the end of the series. Well, let us say it clearly, Yoda-san failed. Instead of taking Honma to get some help, he just have gone along (or maybe he did? we will never know... maybe Honma was actually in the care of some psychiatrists or whatever, but his state couldn't advance). But well, they are all just people and they do mistakes. Aren't there a lot of people making mistakes and bad decisions in this series? killing your bandmate in the spur of a moment, trying to jump off the roof to join your love, trying to stop your best friend who is trying to jump off and then falling yourself. A lot, a lot of stupid decisions, but that's how people are.
