The Art Of Writing Jacob/Esau

First and foremost, I have to thank tellshannon815 for inviting me to a lead discussion here again -- this time about yet another of my very favorite pairings, involving two of my very favorite characters: the almighty Jacob and his awesome brother, Smokey/Man In Black/Nameless Boy/Dr. Smoke/Esau. I’m going to mostly stick with Esau from here on out, though.

*flails* This post is epic win. Jacob and Esau are one of my two favorite relationships in any story ever.

2. I think he's somewhere in between brother and Smoke Monster, but I'm still trying to work out the exact details of how that works in my head.

5. Oh, boy. Before that episode I was super-attached to my Grand Theory of what Jacob and Esau really were. I did think they were related (I didn't get the brothers part right, but I wasn't surprised to find out they were), and I did think that they were really real human beings changed by crazy-mythological-science-stuff. Because I'm stubborn, I found a way to merge my head-canon with show-canon, and I like it even better that way.

6. I write them as Brothers/Frenemies, with a dash of the other two. I don't ship them romantically, but I do like them with a certain amount of emotional intimacy and physical closeness, without the sexual aspects.

9. ABSOLUTELY! I've been in love with Egyptian mythology since forever, and there is a large amount of it embedded in my head-canon for them, as well as the whole Lost setting in general.

10. Hoo-boy, I hardly know how to begin on this subject. I've had this idea for a Jacob and Esau Sideways fic since before knowing what them or it really were, and it works even better in my head now that I do know. I think it's necessary for the way I relate to them that they have some sort of reconciliation, I just need to work up the nerve to write it.

11. They're pretty dark in my head, but with a fair amount of loving playfulness. This paradox makes them even more bittersweetly tragic, and I think that's what attracts me so much to their relationship.

12. Both are both, totally. I believe they both have elements of sad puppy and vicious monster in them, and that type of character is always my favorite.

13. I've always thought of them, and Lost, as being about both Science and Faith. Them being regular human beings Caused & Effected by larger-than-life forces fascinates me.

Glad you liked the post, doll :D

2.) I, too, am still undecided; I can't figure if the Smoke Monster is like Esau because there's a part of him that is Esau, or whether the Monster merely takes bits of his victims in order to better impersonate them and thus further his own agenda. Hmm...

5.) Stubborn? I vote awesome instead. Merging show canon and head canon is the best :D And I agree that, for me, it's probably somewhere between the two that I buy into most.

6.) Sexually, it's touch and go with them for me, in terms of the writing. If I go there, I don't generally write it explicitly, and I have a tendency to bring in other characters as well. Their dynamic, though, is what really gets me, so the sexuality part isn't exactly a deal maker or breaker, on my end.

9.) Egyptian mythology is SO fascinating, and I love seeing it really brought into the development of these two in particular.

10.) Oooo, please write it; I'd love to read it! I'm trying to write one, myself, but it's more slow-going than I had hoped :\

11.) The paradox really is crucial to their appeal, I think, and the dark aspect of them lends a real sense of gravity to their relationship. But, of course: no light without dark -- so the love and fluff is always a wonderful counterpoint.

12.) Agreed :)

13.) Much as I loved the immortal, "otherworldly" aspect that took hold before Across The Sea, the cause-effect element of their humanity really is intriguing.
