The art of writing Jack/Boone

First thing, thanks so much for tellshannon815 for having me hosting this discussion and giving me the (probably ill-advised) chance to ramble about my favorite Lost ship! ♥

BOONE: That's exactly what I was doing. I'm a lifeguard. I'm licensed ( Read more... )

Wow! Epic post is epic (and awesome ;p)!

1) For me I think it was partly the characters and partly the actors; maybe the friendship that transcended onscreen or something? (I totally giggled at that EW video of IS talking about the week they shot his death scenes, and how hard it was for both him and MF.) Boone is just so eager to find his place and figure himself up, and Jack is both the worst mentor but also totally fitting in the sense of responsibility he had towards him. When I think back to S1 at all, that relationship is one of the first things I think of. :D

2) Hard, but mostly because I don't ever really write Boone, and I still find it hard to grasp the dynamics of Jack's interpersonal relationships with anyone. I think probably the biggest challenge, though, is just that Boone was gone after what, 15 episodes? It's hard to imagine them in any setting other than early-season beach/jungle stuff.

3) Beach stuff for sure, because it really fuels my nostalgia for the first season.

4) I don't know if I could imagine some kind of happy, fluffy ending, but I love anything that has them interacting in an AU setting because it's so different than what canon gave us. I'd like to see something that would give Boone a chance to realize himself more fully, and for Jack to sort of take stock of his role in Boone's death and process that.

5) I'm not a writer who can really ignore canon events -- even with non-canon pairings there's still always a reference/influence from whomever they had a (pertinent) romantic relationship with in the show (i.e.: I can't write Dan/Juliet without Sawyer and Charlotte popping up somewhere). So I had Shannon and Kate in the sole Jack/Boone I wrote -- though not romantically -- and I think the same would happen if I were to write them again. I think any good writer can work in that kind of stuff and still make the focus pairing feasible; not that I have anything at all against total AU, but it's not really my cup of tea.

6) I'd say it's definitely up there -- maybe Christian's (if we're talking about pre-show deaths) would be the only one to rival it. I think any time Jack's put in a position where he equates death = his failure, it's something that will stay with him for ages, and add to his Mr. Fix-It complex.

9) I think it's probably suffered the same fate as any pairing where one/both the characters die in canon in that it's difficult for a lot of writers to keep inspiration/readers to keep interest when there's no hope in sight that there's more to come. It kind of feels like you're writing into a void when there's no possibility of any other interaction/mention/etc., you know? The Sideways world this season is good for that in that sense. ;D
