New Feature at The Quill - Jam Session #1

May 01, 2009 14:29

I want to test out a new biweekly feature in this community: an open post for writers to discuss their current writing experiences. So please drop by to give us a sneak peek of what you’re working on or share what’s inspired you lately. If you’re stuck with something, why not ask your fellow writers for support? If you’re not feeling particularly ( Read more... )

Don't despair, at least it sounds like the middle part of the process is under the control!

I did the alphabet meme, where someone gives you a word, fandom, and character/pairing for certain letters of the alphabet, so my ongoing project is to finish that. I have about three fics waiting in the wings, but I kind of feel like it's not fair to post those when I already owe people fic, you know?

Also, the more depressing the show gets, the more I wanna write idyllic, fluffy Sawyer/Juliet fic. *clings to ship*

You're a generous writer. I'm sure your prompters would understand if you have more pressing plot bunnies to deliver.

I've just finished a fic, and have nothing in the wings. It seems like a good time to ask my flist for prompts with either the alphabet meme or a simple, give me a prompt request.

I'm sure Juliet and Sawyer wished you were writing their story right now!

Aw, well, thanks for saying so. :) It just makes me feel a bit guilty, so I sort of put things on the back-burner.

I just feel so bad for them. They were so happy and then everything started going to crap on them. :(

I saw the alphabet meme. I've twisted it slightly to just get one of my friends to give me a word. Unfortunately she's evil and as such I've only done two.

I know how you feel though about not wanting to post fic while still 'owing'. I guess though that more people get a bonus than get disappointed :)

I find the show really does impact on people's muse. The less I 'like' it, the more AU and fluffy I tend to go :)

Here's an issue that is praying on my mind recently...

How important are reader comments to your writing motivation? So I've recently quit writing BSG fic. I've think I've played with that verse as much as I care too, even though I had a lot of friends/readers there. I've been having a few ideas for Mad Men fics (new fandom!). Someone at Twop forums came up with a S3 story idea that Ken/Peggy could start dating and Salvador and Pete could become embittered drinking partners. I thought that might be funny. I'd love to write a Sal POV. But MM fandom just isn't very big and I feel a wanker saying it, but the lack of readership is off-putting ( ... )

There's this idea that we shouldn't want comments - or at least shouldn't *admit* that we want comments. It's very pervasive! Like, wanting comments diminishes you somehow. But really, screw that. I want comments! Tons of them! Oodles and oodles. I can never get enough comments, even though I make myself be content with getting five or more on a fic, the truth is that getting pages of comments is a total thrill and highly motivating.

MM is a difficult proposition. There is really not a fic-reading fandom out there - there's not even a single fic comm. I guess it depends on whether you're prepared to put the effort into a fic knowing the readership may be quite small. Sometimes that's worth it - I've written a lot of fic when I knew not too many people would read it - but I think your personal motivation to write that particular story has to be high in order to make it worth it.

I have no idea how people who write OF do it. I couldn't deal w/the isolation and lack of fb.

Gonna post here very quickly, but then probably won't come back to this post until after I've seen The Variable, which will be Sunday, because I don't want spoilers right now ( ... )

Regarding your desire for a happy ending, I'm sure it is possible to get there. In the meantime, perhaps you should consider what an unhappy ending would be and why that seems more fitting. Then you could work backwards and think about how to avoid it.
