Still, people keep saying "Hey! It's a Moor in a kilt!"
Wow. I've seen that guy, and my reaction was, "Dude, awesome kilt." I don't understand!
I don't think it's so much a "why are we monochrome and how can we fix it?" as a "why do we assume we're monochrome (and all the other defaults I mentioned) and does that mean we're secretly racist?" stemming from the ephemeral and largely virtual enviroment in which fandom exists: Teh Mightie Internets!
Maybe the SCA is too Eurocentric?
I have thought that from my first foray, but as you said, it's not like they're discouraging of non-European personae or players. I saw a marked enthusiasm (in the dance group, anyway) for unusual personae (probably because it usually=new dances! Yay!).
Well, except that to say that "fandom is white" is to completely ignore movements like the otaku, among whom there are fannish submovements that make y'all look like a bunch of pikers.
Exactly! Exactly! Just like saying "Canadians are largely ignorant of race relations" (see my eta to this post) is to ignore our entire sordid past and present! It's just--gah. It's all very stupid and tiring.
And it might be a European/Caucasian psychological/cultural thingie, but that would again discount otaku, for one, and Indian film buffs in India, and yeah. There are weird subcultures everywhere. We just tend to think ours are the best and most important and only ones ('cause we're special). THAT is probably the same psychological thingie that caused imperialism and colonialism in the first place.
