There's a thing to River--it's a tricky thing, right. Because she says things out of nowhere, but not really, and she says things that are funny, but not really. She is the essence of irrelevance, but is the absolute gravity of every situation. Just having her say, "There is no gold in Rome this summer," in the middle of a dinner scene is not writing River. It's writing a non sequitur. Having her say that, and then, six scenes later, having it be the most important line in the story in a way that, in itself, doesn't even make sense--that is writing River.
The end!
Bye.
