Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation ( Read more... )

Everyone's a tool. I used to specifically point out all the tools in society, the ones that wrapped themselves up in this so called "blanket of ignorance" and zipped up their jacket of culture to go out and face the world. But now I've come to the realization that pointing out and judging identities makes me the biggest tool of all, and I should just as well get off my pedestal and see myself for who I am too.

Hey guess what, I'm a tool!!

The kid that plays videogames all day and knows every cheat and passageway in halo is a tool. The competition dancer that berates herself for getting a 9.5 is a tool. The musician that dedicates his life to perfection of chords and knowledge of classic rock history is a tool. The businessman, the tree planter, the doctor.. They're all tools!

It's human instinct to fit somewhere, to have a scene, to be labeled. No matter how hard we try to be distinctive, we're always striving to project an outer shell which reflects the way we want to be perceived and a shell that will be acknowledged by someone.

As much as I try to be an individual, by liking something, I'm immediately being connected to society, a scene and a group of people that share my interest. I never thought I'd ever day this.. But what the hell wrong with liking American idol if you really love it? Does that make you any lower than someone who is an "artistic" soul and listens to everything underground? Not really. The point is, you have to take pride in what you like and do it for yourself. If you actually like something, continue to like it, and don't forfeit your interests because they've become popular. I don't think I've ever stopped liking a band because they've "sold out".. or er, became mainstream. If I'm still enjoying their music, I'll take pride in it. DAMNIT. I THINK THE BEACH BOYS ARE HOT SHIT. Fuck, whatever.

Your interests, your clothes and your tastes shouldn't make you an individual.. Because honestly, if your searching for uniqueness within your likes and dislikes, you're never going to find it. The thing that makes us unique is our personality.. And so what if you get labeled by the ignorant fools that feel the need to stamp you? Stand up and show 'em what you got in your brain. Liking underground music, having extreme artistic knowledge or dressing in vintage cool clothes is never ever going to make you an individual. I wish people would stop attempting to show off their interests in order to prove their individuality, and maybe just be themselves.

We're all individuals inside.. so next time you meet someone who dresses like a punk little scenester, maybe try to get to know them and discover that they're actually unlike anyone you have ever met.

Well, I know this was really distant to the point you were trying to make, but I felt it had to be said, as it was eating away at my insides. :) ..Probably full of contradictions and grammatical errors, but whatever, I wrote it as it came to me. toodles.

I agree with you. You are a tool.

But really Jules I see where youre coming from and its a valid point. So you're saying that theyre all tools, but what exactly by this definition is a tool? It seems you are saying it is someone who devotes a lot of time and energy into something others think is worthless. You've said some interesting stuff here though, its cliche that we shouldnt judge a book by its cover and all that jazz, but i think the better point you've made is maybe not to take ourselves too seriously and take pride in whatever interests us(even if it is american idol). However, I still think that we cannot let these interests define us.

"if your searching for uniqueness within your likes and dislikes, you're never going to find it....The thing that makes us unique is our personality."

Yet really, what we choose to like and dislike forms a huge part of our identity and thus our personality. So what defines the personality rather than the identity? I guess its the attributes of our character. Like whether a person is smart, funny, caring or genuine...or maybe a complete jerk.

Even if you are a "tool" by some definition I love you lots cuz you know what, I'm probably a raging tool myself so la de daaaa! ---Nico
