Character History:
Childhood

Riku grew up in Destiny Islands, a small archipelago in the middle of a vast ocean. It was a peaceful world, never wrought by catastrophe or battles between good and evil. It was merely a world where children played, went to school, and lived normal lives. However, on weekends and during summer, Destiny Islands became the children’s domain. For years the kids used and played on a small island off the coast. It is an island of obstacle courses, play grounds, and tree houses, used during the day and night and completely safe. The children were free to come and go as they pleased, and it was here that Riku made his domain. He, Sora, Tidus, Selphie, and Wakka played and fought on the island, Riku emerging triumphant every time. While the five were close and spent almost every day together, Riku was never as close to Tidus, Selphie and Wakka as he was with Sora. The brunet and Riku had a rivalry of sorts, each pushing each other forward both in terms of emotional growth and in fighting ability, and while Riku never once lost to Sora, he always looked forward to their fights.

One day, only a short while after Kairi was found after a meteor shower, Sora thought he heard a monster in the Secret Place under the tree. Riku followed Sora in there to look around, secretly yearning for some sort of adventure, some break from the mundane pattern that had become his life. Ever since Kairi had appeared a question had been nagging at him. Was there something out there? Something other than this place he lived in? A distant land? Another world?

While the monster Sora had heard turned out to be just the wind, when they were leaving the place Riku glanced back, surprised to see a glimmering keyhole in what had just been solid wood.

From that day forward the question plagued at Riku’s mind until finally, it became all he could think about. Every day his mind was plagued with thoughts and dreams of another, more interesting world out there, and he became practically obsessed with finding it and getting there, escaping the world he had grown up in. It was this blind desire that opened his heart to darkness… and a desire that led to everything that happened to him, Kairi, and Sora.

A short while after Riku first saw the keyhole of their world the two boys met and befriended Kairi. For the next few years they lived a peaceful, happy life, but no matter how hard Riku tried the seed of curiosity and darkness had been planted, and he became determined to find a way, any way, to leave their home. Together, when Riku was fifteen and Sora and Kairi were fourteen, they started building a raft to attempt to sail away from the world they were in and into the next. Riku became obsessed with this idea, to the point where Kairi noticed something was strange. The night before they were supposed to leave, some unknown feeling drove Riku out of his bed and to their play island where he stood on the small island with the paopu tree, staring at the water and waiting for something to happen, like he knew it would.

The Start of a Journey

He didn’t have to wait long. Sora, urged to the island out of fear for their raft, stumbled onto where Riku was waiting. He extended a hand to him, offering to take Sora into the darkness, into another world. He stood there, hand out stretched, sinking into the darkness as Sora struggled. The last thing he felt was Sora’s reaching fingers, and then his world went dark.

He emerged to a broken world, a fragment of the Islands he had grown up on, and he assumed it was a trick of the darkness. He wandered, watching the destruction for a while, before a cloaked figure appeared behind him. Riku turned to him, watching as the cloaked figure extended his hand, and the boy couldn’t help but smirk. He would later realize this was Xehanort’s heartless come to lead him, to claim him, but at the moment he only realized it to be what he had been waiting for. He stepped into the portal the figure opened and into another world.

When he opened his eyes he was in a strange world, completely alone. He would learn later that this was Hollow Bastion, but at the time of his awakening he panicked, expecting his friends to be there. However, he wasn’t truly alone. Soon enough Maleficent approached him, sensing the hold darkness had on the boy and his unique powers as a second keyblade wielder. She used that darkness and Riku’s desperation to find and reunite with Kairi and Sora in order to manipulate the boy, dragging him deeper and deeper into the darkness.

Descent into Darkness

She took him to Traverse Town, showing Riku that Sora was stronger and had no need for him, replacing his presence with Donald and Goofy. Even when he disappeared on his friend, Sora didn’t seem to miss him, instead going about and laughing. It hurt, and Maleficent just twisted a knife in that wound, opening Riku even more to the darkness radiating around him. Riku soon gained mastery over using the darkness to travel between worlds, searching desperately for Kairi as Sora just seemed to drag on, not even truly looking for Kairi. Maleficent told Riku of Sora’s progression, twisting her words and further corrupting Riku’s heart. Finally, the boy found Kairi, but when he did she was nothing but an empty shell, a body without a heart. No matter how hard he tried or how much he begged Maleficent to help her, he couldn’t get Kairi to wake up.

It was a desperate search that led Riku to the bowels of Monstro, where Maleficent had told him a puppet with a heart had resided. Determined to find the puppet and study him, trying to figure out how an empty shell, like Kairi was now, had obtained a heart in order to save his friend. It was an added bonus that Riku could run into Sora here. However, unlike their previous meeting in Traverse Town, Riku felt only bitterness and betrayal for his one time best friend, leading him on a goose chase around Monstro, reveling in how he teased and hurt Sora along the way.

Finally, after Riku could gain nothing further from Pinocchio, he allowed Sora to catch up with him, offering a partnership of sorts. Even then, with his heart so close to being swallowed by the darkness, Riku was only thinking of his friends, of how to save Kairi and how to rekindle his friendship with Sora. He did not think his methods were questionable, instead seeing them as a necessary sacrifice in order to save Kairi’s heart. However, Sora refused his offer, shaking off the last grasp Riku had on their friendship and pushing the teen even further into the darkness. A heartless surprised them, and Riku used the distraction to open a portal back to Hollow Bastion.

Angry and hurt, Riku’s heart fell even further to the darkness inside of him, and Maleficent felt that he was ready to take those final few steps towards her side of the fight. She granted Riku the ability to control the Heartless and sent her to Captain Hook’s ship as her ambassador, suggesting that Riku take Kairi with him to show Sora once and for all who’s path was the right one. He waited for Sora on Hook’s ship, and when the boy arrived he showed Sora his power, telling him that Sora’s path was the wrong one and showing him exactly what had happened to Kairi. Angered by Sora doing nothing but call him stupid, insist that Sora’s way was the right one, that Riku had fallen to darkness. Sick of hearing what Sora had to say, he sent his one-time friend to the depths of the ship and followed Hook inside. There he informed the Pirate that Wendy was not one of the Princesses of Heart, and in a burst of recklessness he took Kairi and used the Corridor of Darkness without a vessel, putting a serious strain on his heart. Maleficent took advantage of this event, awakening the darkness within Riku, giving birth to new, stronger powers.

Ansem’s Slave

Finally Sora made it to Maleficent’s stronghold, and Riku was there to greet him, taking care of an “intruder” as he waited. Sora seemed upset with what Riku had done to the Beast, but Riku honestly couldn’t find the need to care what his former friend thought of him. Instead, he thanked Sora for delivering the keyblade to him, taking advantage of his newfound strength in order to forcefully take the blade from Sora, prompting Donald and Goofy to follow him and leaving Sora almost defenseless. It was a sweet victory for Riku, as he got what he wanted as well as making Sora feel the same betrayal he had felt what seemed like ages ago, when he had watched his friend laugh with Donald and Goofy while he traveled and fought alone.

Riku sensed Sora following him throughout the castle and decided to wait, embracing the darkness even further and altering his appearance for the fight he knew was coming. Experience told Riku that he would win, and his recent gain of power and everything “good” that had happened to him just increased that feeling. However, when he faced Sora and had not only Donald and Goofy drawn to the brunet’s side but also the keyblade he had taken from Sora, his heart wavered, and not even the darkness could keep Riku from losing.

He retreated shamefully. Angry and injured, Riku stumbled through the castle, cursing his weakness until finally, a voice spoke to him. He turned and saw a figure in the darkness, a figure that mocked his weak heart and told him that he could help Riku grow stronger, that he could fix the weakness in his heart. By this point Riku’s heart and mind had become so warped that all he could do was say yes. However, right before Ansem could enter his body, Riku responded to the pull.

Point in Canon: Right before he gives his body over to Ansem in KH1.
Conditional: Brief summary of previous RP history: n/a

Character Personality: During his childhood Riku was, so to speak, “King of the Island” seeing as he was the strongest and second oldest in the group. As such, he quickly developed an attitude to match his status. Someone who didn’t know Riku all that well back then would have described him as egotistical, or even a jerk, because that was usually the first impression that people got of him. However, the truth of the matter was that Riku was just a confident kid, insanely loyal to his friends with an irrepressible sense of humor.

Even after all that’s happened, Riku hasn’t changed all that much.

Riku’s confidence is unending. He believes himself to be unbeatable, stronger and better than everyone he comes into contact with. He doesn’t even fully believe that his heart has been weakened, poisoned by the corruptive words of his “allies” and the darkness he seeps himself in. He believes himself unable to be controlled, thinking instead that he does the controlling… however, from where he’s pulled from, that’s far from the truth. He’s been blinded by his own confidence, his own ego, his darkness, and as such he lusts for nothing other than power, Sora’s heart, to win. As far as his confidence goes, he pretty much challenges anyone who thinks they’re strong, boasts about his own fighting skill and looks. If he’s challenged to a fight or called a coward, he’ll bristle just as normal and draw his weapon, demanding a fight. Even indirect challenges (such as given an easy out compared to a harder path) will appeal to that confidence of his. Riku will never take the easier path, instead welcoming any and all challenges.

Riku’s loyalty also remains as the basis of his personality. His friends have always meant everything to him, ever since he was a kid. They were the people that were there for him his entire life, the people that made him happy, and as a result he would do anything for them. Anything. The ironic and painful thing about Riku’s unshakable mindset is that this blind loyalty actually led to his downfall. Maleficent used the love he felt for his friends to poison Riku’s heart, planting jealousy in him as he saw Sora laughing with Donald and Goofy, and using Riku’s determination to save Kairi to lure him into doing so with the wrong methods. Everything he did was for his friends. Never once did he do anything for himself, instead sacrificing his morals, his free will, his body, everything for Kairi and Sora. And it wasn’t just that one time either. He does it constantly, diving to lows Sora and Kairi could never go to in order to do what is needed. Manipulating people, destroying people, everything that sits badly with him he does for his friends. At the time being, his mind is so warped and poisoned by the darkness he lusts after that he could care less about Sora, even going so far as to actually want to kill him in order to free Kairi’s heart. And even then, that goal has become poisoned by his own pride. For the time being he could really care less about his friend’s heart, it’s a secondary goal. The single thought driving him forward is to grow stronger, to embrace the darkenss even more so he can defeat Sora once and for all, so he can make up for the boy taking back his keyblade, taking the followers Riku had managed to take from him for just a short while. Nothing pisses him off more than the fact that Sora’s friendship with Donald and Goofy trumped their mission, something he thought couldn’t happen.

Now, another thing that has led to Riku’s downfall time and time again is that once he sets a goal he becomes completely obsessed with it. He will pursue whatever it is he is after with such intensity that he becomes blind to everything he is doing and deaf to whatever others are telling him. He only hears and sees and knows what will help him in his goal. For example, his dream to leave the Islands and see other worlds was so intensely pursued that it caused his heart to warp. He blindly pushed after it, not even caring when his world was destroyed, instead seeing it as an opportunity to finally leave. After that he blindly pursued his goal of rescuing Kairi, sacrificing himself in order to achieve that end. Although these are the biggest examples of this trait, Riku often does this on anything and everything, just on the smallest of things it comes off as stubbornness. This can be anything from refusing to back down from a fight, refusing to let someone do something stupid, him doing something stupid, or, as it most commonly is with Sora and Kairi, his inability to let things go. If he makes up his mind to beat himself up about something, he will, until he either hears reason and stops or until someone brains him with something and he fights off his inner angst.

Riku’s biggest fear is being alone. Its not something he broadcasts, and most of the time it doesn’t seem to bother him, but the truth of the matter is that whenever he has to deal with things on his own he gets tense and paranoid until finally he has some sort of breakdown. During his journey he was alone most of the time, forced to make decisions about an unknown world all by himself and finding ways to survive without friends to lean on. While he doesn’t fully recognize this fear at the moment, considering how warped he’s become by Ansem and Maleficent’s influences, the fact of the matter is that at the end of the day, where Sora’s been surrounded by friends and people that want to help him, Riku’s holding his own in a place full of people who want to use him and his skills to their own gain.

Another notable fear Riku has is of the darkness. As much as he assures people and himself that he no longer fears the dark force inside of him, that isn’t true. It’s a respectable fear, and even though it’s in remission at the moment, he is incredibly cautious about doing things that could possibly cause it to come back and plague him. Any dark thoughts cause that little ball inside of him to squirm and attempt to get free, and given when he’s from, its only a matter of time before his fear becomes worthwhile.

As much as Riku’s compassion and loyalty are his downfalls, they are also his strengths. His feelings towards his friends and those he cares about push his physical strength to new heights during fights, and even allows him to endure more trauma emotionally than he would have otherwise. Also, his loyalty and devotion to his friends isn’t just one way, Riku knows for a fact that Kairi and Sora would go to similar lengths for him. And sometimes, just knowing that fact is enough to push him forward.

Again, with Riku the things that are his greatest weaknesses can also prove to be his greatest strengths. And while “stubbornness” isn’t quite considered strength, it goes hand in hand with “dedication” and “drive”. Riku is never down and out for long. He has his moments of self-hate, as do anyone, and does have to deal with a lot of guilt that he’s built up for years, but at the same time he never lets them get him down. In any situation where it seems as if he’s about to fail or there is no hope, Riku never looses that instinct-driven determination to move forward. Even when he was trapped in the darkness, not knowing if he could get out again, he refused to just lie back and give up. Even if there was no door to the light he pushed himself forward, determined to get out and go back to his life. This doesn’t mean that Riku is an optimist, always believing that things will work out, in fact he’s quite the opposite, always assuming the worst of situations. What this means is that while Riku accepts that an escape or a “good thing” won’t just happen, it doesn’t mean that he can’t stubbornly push and push until it does happen. And throughout his life, this is just what Riku has done, push his way stubbornly through bad situations, refusing to let them weigh him down for too long until finally the situation reverses itself and Riku can finally relax.
Conditional: Personality development in previous game: n/a
Character Plans: Riku’s completely evil for the time being. He’s not even fully thinking of Kairi’s heart, just getting stronger than everyone else. However, in time the Darkness won’t be as corruptive, and he’ll start fading from that evil streak. As a rule, Riku isn’t an unfeeling person, and if he’s forced to do too many inhumane things he’ll start to doubt. So, I’m thinking of having him develop and doubt and maybe eventually turn on whoever he’s sided with.

Appearance/PB:

This is his normal appearance and clothes, at least when he first arrives in Siren. More often than not he’ll keep this clothing style up, and will be loathe to lose the gloves.

When the darkness peaks within him, either while fighting or when he’s just annoyed, he assumes this “Heartless” form. It allows him to use the darkness more easily, forms a protective barrier around his heart. He can switch into this form almost instantly with just a glimmer of darkness.

First Person Sample
[The camera clicks on, showing a head of silver hair, some grass, and the cloudy sky. Everything’s still for a moment until a groan is heard, and the camera twitches, shifts. Riku’s head moves, shakes before the camera jerks almost wildly, showing nothing but the empty field for a moment.]

What the-?

[The view shifts again, raising as Riku pushes himself up a bit before he lets out a sharp cry, crashing back to the ground. There’s a short-lived view of his face for a moment before his hair covered the camera, grunts and groans and panting breath loud against the microphone. Finally, after a while, he pushes himself up, staring down at the camera, frowning, face pained and pale]

What is this?

[He taps the screen, just under where the camera is, and there’s a beep before the video turns off, leaving the sounds of shifting, of pained grunts and shortness of breath.]

Where is this?

Third Person Sample
Riku was still short of breath, still on all fours on the baseball diamond, chest aching and throbbing and sending out stabs of sharp pain through his chest, his arms, his legs. His muscles were aching both from the fight and the sudden ripping that had pulled him into this world. Did he accidentally open a portal? It would explain the pain, the disorientation… but it wouldn’t explain the device strapped to his wrist, the strange thing he felt wrapped around his ear.

He pushed himself up slowly this time, stumbling, reaching down to the grass next to him, hand wrapping around the handle of the weapon and shoving it into the ground, using it as a crutch as he panted, got to his feet. His head was spinning, chest tight and aching, as he looked around, took in his surroundings. It was definitely another world. A hostile one, if those signs were anything to go by. But really, instead of being threatening, they only really caused him to snort and shake his head, pulling Souleater out of the ground and swiping it through the air once, jaw clenching and face tightening as he breathed in and out quickly, urgently through his nose, the pain clutching at him making his head reel, making him want to vomit.

“Maleficent?” he tried, Souleater vanishing in a burst of black smoke, his hand then reaching up to fist in his shirt over his heart, on guard, looking around. No answer. Not that he’d been expecting one. With a scowl, he raised his hand, thinking back to Hollow Bastion, doing everything he’d been told and taught to in order to summon a Corridor… only… nothing happened.

“Perfect. Just perfect,” he grumbled, pressing his hand against his chest harder, glaring around, spotting a building in the distance. Narrowing his eyes, he raised his hand again, calling forth the darkness, and this time a portal opened in front of him, a portal he could step into, through, emerging in front of the building, instantly having to pause and lean against the wall, hissing through his teeth. “Damn it.”

And he was off, wandering down the street, trying his hardest to go explore, ignoring the pain in his chest, his muscles.
