Conventions, conventions, conventions...

The Baltimore area was full of neat conventions and shows this weekend.  Charming Ryan wanted me to go to the reptile show in Havre de Grace with him on Saturday, but instead I opted to go the gun show (which happened to be right next door to the motorcycle show) at Timonium Fairgrounds with Jeremy because I'm in the market for a handgun and wanted to take the opportunity to check them out, compare prices, etc.  There were some cool firearms at the show, and it rekindled my desire to build an AR-15 and also sparked a desire to own a Mossberg 590 pump shotgun.  I'm having a lot of trouble deciding between pistols, so I decided my best bet-after narrowing down the field to four-was to go rent the ones I was interested and see how they handled on the range.  Fortunately, Continental Arms is only a mile or so up the street, so we headed over there.  I did the "whirlwind .40 test drive tour" and fired two boxes of ammo through a Glock G22, Smith & Wesson M&P, Walther P99 and Sig Sauer P229.  I didn't like the feel of the Glock's trigger, couldn't group to save my life with the P99 and thought the Sig was a nice gun but a little out of my price range.  I've pretty much decided on the M&P because I loved the feel of it and had good luck with the accuracy right off the bat.  The only thing that bothered me about the M&P is the uncommon design of the slide release; I think I'll be able to live with that once I get used to it.

For the sake of sharing my time equally with all members of the Tolliver family, I met up with Megan yesterday and we drove down to Laurie's so that we could all head down to the Baltimore Tattoo Convention (just around the corner from the auto show) together.  The event was decidedly lackluster and we spent only about an hour there, but we didn't pay and got to see a lot of good people and some cool artwork.  The best part of the convention by far was that they were piping Iron Maiden through the P.A. for the first half-hour or so that we were there.  Afterwards, a semi-old-school dinner gathering took place involving Spazz, Rumbaugh, Jared, Laurie and myself, and then I finally went to see Juno.  I was extremely impressed, especially with Ellen Page's performance.  If you're a jerk like me who hasn't seen this film yet in the months it's been out-mostly because you prioritize Rambo movies way ahead of anything else-do yourself a favor and go see it before it leaves theaters!
