The only weird part of being married so far has been the slight differences in how we spend money. Steve is all about big houses and quality cookware but he is also about 12 dollar haircuts and wearing 1993 jeans. I did go with him to the place where he gets his haircut because I was desperate for one and did not have time to drive all the way out to Mario Tricoci for an appointment anytime soon. It cost all of $16 plus $2 tip.
So, I somewhat fear becoming the stereotypical frumpy suburban woman who shops sales at Kohls and gets $16 haircuts at former Fantastic Sams salons. Which is kinda scary for someone who decided that appearances matter in Agency work and has tried to maintain a level of style (not high style by any means though) that looks "ok" in those settings. I worry that with a big house payment I won't be able to afford quality stuff anymore and we will be "house poor" like they say. But then again, we drive 11 and 8 yr old cars, we brown bag our lunches and do a lot of other cost savings things, so maybe shopping at Kohls and getting $16 haircuts is more our style than Banana Republic anyway. Maybe we're more SmartMoney Magazine than Martha Stewart Living? At least we know where our means are, so we stay beneath them and we'll probably buy a smaller house too.
