» Pantheon: Greek
» God(dess): Clio, muse of history
» Reference: here and here
» Family: Zeus (father) and Mnemosyne (mother) ; Hyacinth (son with Pierus)
» Played By: Kate Winslet
» Human Alias: Ryan Coleman
» Human Age: 35
» Ability: She can rattle off dates, and tell you when just about anything happened, right down to the month and day of major world events. She doesn't know every single event of every place ever, nor does she know really most dates to specific people, unless they were involved in a really big world event (i.e. when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated).
» Occupation: Archivist

» History: When Zeus bedded Mnemosyne, nine daughters were born from their time together. The nine muses, who were designed to be a source of knowledge to be related orally to mortals. They were the ones that passed on the poetry and the myths so that they would not be forgotten. Clio was born as the muse of history, and often represented with scrolls of knowledge, or tablets of writing.

Clio once chided Aphrodite for being in love with Adonis, and so Aphrodite caused her to fall in love with Pierus. From him, they bore a son named Hyacinth. Later she gave the Phoenician alphabet to the Greeks.

» Reincarnations: Clio's first reincarnation happened not long after the height of greek mythology. They'd only been forgotten a short time when Louise Denouge was born, poor and destitute. Her father had been a priest, who had his way with a young member of his church and got her pregnant. He never claimed the little girl was his, and the two of them were sent to the poor house. Despite the fact that they had next to nothing, somehow Louise survived, and was sent to live as a nun as soon as she was able. She lived in a monastery most of her life, and lived until the 48, just as poor as she had been brought into the world. She had a good life, but not a very exciting one.

A couple of hundred years later, Donna Sullivan was born in Ireland during the famine. It was a trying time, but she had a very big family. There were nine children in total, and each one was sent out of the house as as fast as they possibly could. Whether it was to get a job, or to get married, her family needed to get rid of the mouths they had to feed. Despite that, their family was really close. Their house was owned by a landlord that let them stay only by the grace of god. People were dying left and right, and that included a large portion of her family. Her mother died first, and then later on, her father died as well. Donna was shipped off to an older man who wed her and moved her to England. They had five children of their own and he kept her as a child slave almost.

Ryan Coleman was born in 1974 in Wales, and the only child to a single gay father. The woman who was her biological mother was a friend of her father and was like a surrogate for him. She saw her mother on holidays, but knew that she was her father's child through and through. The two were like peas in a pod and did everything together. When her father had a new boyfriend, she sized them up and if she didn't like him, she would tell her father and he would get rid of them. He listened to her pretty much in everything, especially as she got older. Though she liked history, it wasn't until Ryan turned twenty one that she had an inkling of what she was. By that time, she was half way through university, majoring in history. It was easy for her, considering that she was very good with dates.

When she graduated from university, she decided to travel for a while. She took time off, and worked and played in different countries. From France, to Russia, to the Netherlands, and finally the United States. It was there a couple of years ago that she met James. It was a bit of a whirl wind romance, and the two fell in love rather quickly. They got married in 2001, and Ryan became a US citizen a couple of months later. Things were going rather well, but the marriage didn't last very long. They hadn't known each other for long enough, and they started to fight. There was a lot of things that ended their marriage, but in 2004, they got a divorce.

Since then, Ryan has moved to New York and become an Archivist for the state. She's dated a bit more, and almost got married a second time, but backed out at the last minute because she was too scared to. She still talks to her ex-husband though, and they actually keep in touch. It's entirely possible that she's still quite in love with him and wants him back, but he seems to be more than a bit reluctant when it comes to these sorts of things. She lives by herself in an apartment in Brooklyn.

» Personality: Both Clio and Ryan have always been down to earth, and it's something that's stayed with her throughout her reincarnations. She's a muse, so it's only natural that she's got a creative streak. Of course that creative streak has usually a lot to do with history more than anything else, but she loves it. She loves everything about history, it's one of those parts of her that hasn't really gone away. She believes that most people can learn from the past. No matter what you're going through, there is always someone who has gone through it before. In exactly the same situation, with nearly the same results. She's got an incredible memory, and picks things up rather easily. She loves to travel as much as she likes history, though that is because she likes to know about history and see it first hand. There isn't a museum in New York that she hasn't been to. To be in the same place as something that has withstood the test of time makes her think that she could really make a contribution to the world.

She's very patient, and has a kind streak a mile wide. When it comes to her muse-sisters, she loves them all very dearly. A lot of that is because she was an only child this time around, but it also because she feels a kinship with them. There isn't anything she wouldn't do for them. Being older than the rest means she tends to take on a bit of a mother-hen persona when it comes to both them and anyone younger than her. She's sweet but matter of factual. That isn't to say that she's naive, though she can be about her own life. She has a habit of seeing things in other people that they tend not to be able to see. Her own advice rarely goes heeded in her own life. It took her a while to get out of her marriage, and wasn't even ready to admit that she wanted to give it up. However her husband had wanted it, and so she humbly stepped aside. Some might say she's a bit of a doormat when it comes to love.

It is said that she is the only one of her sisters that does not play a musical instrument. That is actually false, though no one actually knows it. Oddly enough, Clio knows how to play the fiddle, and though she thinks it might have something to do with the civil war, the truth is that she just likes that sort of music. She leaves all of the musical aspirations to her sisters. If there is one person that is able to weave an intricate story and tell it with finesse and love, it's Clio. Some say that she should have been a narrator or write her own books, but she never has.

Towards other people, she can come across as a bit flustered. There isn't a time when she isn't embarrassed by just about everything. There's always a blush on her cheeks, and she doesn't kow how to deal with compliments or criticism either. She has a hard time conveying what she's thinking to people when she talks to them. It causes her to ramble a bit when she talks to everyone, it doesn't matter who they are. More often than not, people have to tell her to take a breath when she speaks. There's just a lot of things she wants to convey in a short period of time. She seems to be intimidated a lot by people who are more confident of themselves. Her awkwardness, especially to those she doesn't know that well, makes her a little unapproachable.

If something goes wrong, she is the first one to jump in to help. With danger, she tends to throw herself in the line of fire without thinking about the consequences. In fact, she does that a lot, even without there being danger. She's always doing things without thinking even when she doesn't know the outcome or that what she's doing will do more harm than good. Most of the time she butts in where she isn't welcome, to take care of someone or some thing. She tries to throw herself into life and try out new things, and if there's a chance to try something new, she'll take it. Whether that's jumping out of an airplane, or learning how to cook, she'll give it a whirl. Though she's open to meeting new people, and she'll respond to just about everyone, then she tends to talk too much.

This time around, Ryan is thrifty, to the point of being a cheapskate. She's the kind of person who likes to take things home from the restaurant, and send away for free samples of everything if she can get away with it. She has award points and cards for all sorts of places. If it's free, she'll take it. Her house is filled with junk because she sends away for things. She's responsible though and pays her bills on time, and tries not to leave anyone hanging. If she makes a promise, she'll do anything to keep it.

» Sample Journal: Today I was watching the television and there was this show about these people who were born with a defect in which they aged one year for every four year. A bit like that movie Jack but in reverse. There was this man, who was in his forties, but he looked about thirteen. There was always some defects with the neurological signs as well. His brain hasn't really grown much past a six year old. But watching it, it just made me realize just how much love all of those people have for each other. It takes very strong people to raise a child who has a lot of needs. These people love and treat their children just like any other. And you can just look at these people who have this disease and there is as much love there as anyone else.

I was thinking about adopting, because I realize just how many children are out there who need love. So many have been abandoned by people who cannot care for someone with special needs. Or perhaps they cannot care for anyone at all. I'm willing to take care of a child that doesn't have anyone else. I want to do it, I think I might need to. It's amazing how one little thing can change you perspective on things. I'd thought about families before, but after getting a divorce, I suppose I didn't think much of it. Now though, I know I want a family. A real one.

» Sample Roleplay: Once upon a time, the woman known as Clio once upon a time was buried amongst a very large pile of papers when she heard a familiar voice somewhere from up above. Instinctively, she knew who it was without even having to look up from all of her work. It wasn't the voice she really wanted to hear, but she knew that she had to just get rid of him before he did any lasting damage.

"Ryan, I know you know that I'm here. I wish you'd just come out and talk to me." His voice was soothing as always, but every time he spoke to her, she felt this sadness. Not from his voice, but just her own stupidity. She didn't know why she was always sad when he came around.

That was the thing, she didn't know why he was still there, talking to her. They were supposed to be divorced. James still came around though, and she didn't get why.

She glanced up finally and shrugged her shoulders. "I'm busy, James. What is it that you want?"

"Goodness, I didn't realize that my presence was such an intrusion to you, Ryan."

"It's not like that, I just didn't know that when people got divorced, they still talked to each other." She got to her feet and stretched out her limbs, and looked up at him. He was there, handsome and staring down at her like he always did. She really hated it, the way he looked at her. Like he was about to ask her to come on home, that he missed her.

Instead what she got was: "I was hoping that we could get some dinner and talk. There are some things I have to ask you. And papers for you to sign."

"It's been three years."

"I know, but.. okay, so there's no paperwork, but I just want to talk to you."

She shouldn't. Not at all. Ryan didn't want to go, she didn't want to deal with him and everything else. But he was looking at her with those eyes of his.

"All right, let me just finish up here, and we can go." Turning away from him, Ryan started to gather up her papers, and try to figure out just what he wanted. Dinner, he said. She'd heard that before. And it usually ended up with her in his bed for what she always said was the very last time. He was stringing her along, and she was tired of it.

Why couldn't she just let go?
