the last 24 hours has been nearly constant work. last evening--which seems like days ago now--i worked a small concert event at the convention center. it was an amazingly awesome latin jazz band. i can't believe i'm even typing those words, but it's true. but yeah, a super easy shift. BUT then i had to be back at work at 1 AM for the portland to coast walking relay thing. i still don't really understand what that's all about.
myself and three others had to set up at the start point under the east side of the hawthorne bridge for the first wave of walkers (aka zombies) at 3 AM. (we always clock in and start packing up two hours before any given event, even if we end up sitting around for an hour.) i was solely in charge of the KINK tent, andrew was in charge of the KBFF tent, meghan was in charge of KUPL and shane (who is a dead ringer for emile hirsch) was a floater to help out everyone and take over for when we needed quick breaks.
i managed to get a couple hours of sleep before i got to work, luckily. the event was six hours long, so 3 AM to 9 AM. basically the same shift as when i worked graveyard at fred meyer. but the difference is, at fred meyer i had to bust my ass every single minute and this time i was standing around saying the same bullshit to people to came up for free stuff. so it was actually MORE tiring just standing around than working constantly. also, there were tons of people, all way too cheery for the ungodly hour(s) that it was.
it was definitely tiring, but not as bad as i thought it would be. i went through my entire thermos of coffee within the first hour and a half. and it was COLD! i swear, the coldest night we've had all summer. but i got to see the sun come up, and the sky was completely clear so it was quite rad. it's been a long time since i've actually watched a sunrise.
by the time the event ended, i had a total second wind and by the time i got home to sleep, it actually took me an hour to doze off. and even then, i only slept for three hours. and THEN, in the afternoon, carl called me and asked if i could go back and work the last hour of the P2C from 5 to 6. it was super easy, and added an extra couple hours to my paycheck. it was total madness down there by then though. so many people. it was nutz.
so yeah, it's been a freaking long two days. even though i got a couple hours sleep here and there, i feel like i've been up for a week. i don't feel shitty though, just ready for some beer and more sleep. it was actually kind of fun in a way. staying up all night is always kind of fun. i wouldn't want to do it regularly of course, but it was an interesting way to make some money.
i also came up with my list of top ten R.E.M. songs:
1. nightswimming
2. fall on me
3. sweetness follows
4. harborcoat
5. electrolite
6. maps and legends
7. half a world away
8. near wild heaven
9. let me in
10. it's the end of the world as we know it
what's a captain scrummy?
