where you can't call my name.
last july, i got a bee in my bonnet about writing and recording top 40 style pop songs, but with tiger and/or ky singing them. tiger has such a cool sounding voice, and ky knows how to produce and record her, so i figured it would be a fun project. so i wrote and demoed a few songs and got ky and tiger on board...then i kind of got cold feet about it. i really feel weird writing in a style that isn't what i'd naturally do, mostly when it comes to lyrics. i mean, i can imitate pretty much any style of instrumental music for money, but when it comes to something that is completely out of my comfort zone that i want people to actually give a shit about, it takes actual work (OMGGG) to get it in shape. so that has kind of been the sticking point.
but ky has been gently prodding me for the past month or so about the fact that tiger has been in town (i guess she's living in los angeles now or something), so i decided to finish up one of those songs and get it ready for tiger to sing. i think the lyrics are in good shape. ms. alyssa "english degree writing police" perkins even signed off on it. i think it'll sound rad once it's done. i have no idea what i'll do with it once it is, but i'll figure that out later.
and of course, ky is going to be recording and producing her vocals to my basic backing track, and producing vocals is one of ky's big strengths. he loves working with singers and pushing them to achieve a specific aesthetic. i'm more of a record-tons-o-takes-and-comp-the-best-bits kind of vocal producer. ky has a vision; i just say, "sing a bunch and see what happens!" it's cool to bring that approach to a song of mine. there was a touch of it on real nights with ky's vocals, but i specifically wanted to showcase his process for this song. i KNOW i'll get a perfect vocal from tiger & ky, and that will give me lots of freedom to work around it.
tomorrow is new year's eve. last year, i played the best and last shaky hands show. i'm still bummed that the shaky hands fizzled out after that, but i'm in spookies now so what what--we're BETTER than the shaky hands of 2010. spookies will own 2012.
this year, alyssa and i are going to her parents' house in gresham for the afternoon and then hanging out with caitlin and brendan in the evening. i'm hoping to make it to the banana stand for their thing, but that may or may not happen because i wanna hang with caitlin as she lives in nebraska now. but i also want to see tiger house and hang at the banana stand!!! i'll just have to play it by parf.
