I should totally be headed to bed right now, but this topic is on my mind and sort of refuses to geroff. I can only hope to dislodge it through writing

When I say "strong female character" I usually mean strong at something (badass, strong-willed, etc.) but I understand what you mean . A woman doesn't have to have the same character traits as a man to be strong. I should stop using this phrase in this context.
The fact that there are more interesting male characters I think is because there must be some statistical correlation between the amount of people preferring certain gender characters and male/female character ratio on screen. (I even confess I prefer male characters myself). Like with everything, I think it is all about supply and demand. There have been an increase in female characters and their variety in the recent years, so things are changing - most likely because more and more people are interested in female characters. I am a pragmatic here.
Personally, I have been told many times that I am non-girly, bossy, "strong lady", etc. etc. I see myself more as a gentle creature but I can't deny that I have never felt I am anyhow different from any man and so suppose it shows? :D It must have something to do with my upbringing, I think there is more genuine gender equality in Russia than in the UK.
I would really recommend you 19th century Russian literature -it is full of strong female herouines that are strong in the way you describe it. My personal favourite is Tatiana Larina from Evgeny Onegin - the girl wasn't exactly running around with a sword but she a) confessed to the man she liked first (why do the girls always have to wait for the man??????), but he refused her b) had enough character to reject him later when he came back to her after she was already married. "I have promised to this man ", she said "and will be always faithful to him".
What a good suggestion about Russian literature! I've been surrounded by books but unable to think of what I want to read lately. Russian literature sounds like it might be what I was craving. And I've never read Onegin, so maybe I should start there!
