Mistake 001 ⇒ Video

[ Stephanie frowns at the camera, obviously a bit disheveled and quite frustrated. ] So I can talk to people on this thing, right? Is there some reason I’m supposed to? I mean, video chat is cool and all, but what’s the point? This isn’t my world. I got all the pamphlets and whatever. What do I do now? Obviously "how do I get home" is a dumb ( Read more... )

Hi, Stephanie. The welcome wagon around here is a little bit lacking, isn't it? The way I see it, if you don't get thrown out of a public building or incarcerated on your first day here, you're doing fairly well as far as coping goes.

I'm Pepper---Pepper Potts. The bad news is, you're stuck here for the time being. The good news is, you're not alone.

I'm not terribly traumatized, except apparently there's a chip in my arm and I can't help but feel like Big Brother is watching me, but I'm sure you get over that eventually.

Anyway, it's nice to meet you Pepper. How exactly not alone am I?

It gets far, far more Big-Brother-y than the chip. Believe me. The Capekillers---oh, excuse me, "S.C.Y.T.H.E."---are the epitome of "always watching".

It depends on the month, but we have somewhere between one and two hundred people on this network. I've been here since the beginning of June. Some people are here longer, some only a few weeks. There's absolutely no rhyme or reason to it.

[ CAPE KILLERS WHAT CRAP. ] Er, why?

And it's only the... "imports" that are on the network, or is it sort of random?

Because they consider anyone who comes in through the machines highly dangerous. Unfortunately for those of us who don't have unstable powers or the hankering to get our villain on, there are some people who have proven them right. Most of us are just honest and displaced. We generally try to help each other out---especially the newcomers.

The network is mostly for imported people, but there are a couple of bigwig natives that have the authority to post here. Most of them offer jobs and such, but if you want help that doesn't have the possibility of having nefarious strings attached, get in contact with Starktech or Wayne Industries.

So they don't actually care if you wear a cape, they just don't trust us period.

Wayne Industries? In New Jersey? Isn't that a little far away to be getting a job?

They don't care. Case in point.

[ attached links: 6/27/10 8/21/10 9/21/10 ]

Needless to say, be careful. They don't always need a reason for the things that they do.

Starktech is in Manhattan, but Wayne Industries is in Seattle. Mr. Wayne reestablished his company here when he arrived. I've worked personally with both companies.

[ That. Okay now she feels nauseous again. ]

Right. Careful. Will do.

[ Yeah she needs a minute to process all that. ]

If you keep your head down, you'll be fine. Where did you end up? There's at list one good part to every city.

But I guess I'm a serial optimist.

[ Keeping her head down is usually pretty easy... but she was just framed for murder the other day. ]

Seattle. I'm guessing if there's a good part it has to do with the Wayne family? That's sort of how it worked in Gotham.

[ there's a pause from her. She chooses her words carefully ]

Mr. Wayne does a lot for the people of Seattle.

Buuuut that's not the good thing. So what is?

Seattle has connections. The people who have been brought here are extremely proactive.

Mr. Wayne is part of the good, but he isn't all of it. He doesn't hog the whole show. Another good thing is the housing. In Truth or Consequences, all you get is a tiny, cramped roach motel. But here, the houses are comfortable. If you have good roommates.

How do you mean, proactive?

So I'm in the nicest city I could be in. That's comforting, I guess.

Many of us work hard to help our overall situation. Scholarship funds, clinics, alternative housing---anyone with a knack for organization or business has pitched in.

You're lucky. You're from Gotham, right?

That's a pleasant surprise. Yeah, born and bred Gotham girl.
