In the society we come from, pecking order is extremely important. Social hierarchy is part of every day life and not just rich versus poor because, well, no ninja is really rich. Instead it goes by age and rank. If someone is your "superior", so to speak, you have to yield to them in all situations, even in every day life. As the "captain" of this apartment-- I'm the oldest, wisest, strongest, most beautiful, etc.-- I'm pulling rank on my "squad".
