WATER!

As most of you are probably aware, Calgary and area is just coming out of the worst flooding in recorded history. As I live on a relative hill from the river I was not directly affected by it, though the city was placed on temporary water restrictions and water quality warnings because local treatment plants simply could not cope with the amount of water going through the system.

As such, I did my civic duty and held off doing laundry and dishes for a few days (several people were fined for washing their cars while the restrictions were on, and damn right), and I purchased a large case of bottled water. That may seem a bit alarmist, but my boss' wife happens to be a chemist working in the lab testing water in the reservoir, and well, I'm sure you get the idea.

Anyway, what I've discovered is that I have been drinking far more water out of those bottles than I ever have just using my Brita. Does yuppie water actually taste better, or have I been hornswoggled by the faux convenience of those cute and tiny plastic bottles? Or what?

Drinking more water is certainly good for me, but as I watch the little pile of plastic bottles grow, the environmentalist in me starts convulsing. I'm perfectly capable of drinking more water than I do, but there seems to be a psychological advantage to these damn bottles. Convenience, taste, or horswoggling? Personal health or the environment?
