They're watching The Snowman, for reference, because of the theme song Matt uploaded for Hitsu on a song post ages ago. Also. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, uzis! ♥♥♥!!! This fic is yours. :3

Hitsugaya’s hair was deceptively soft; enough so that Matt’s fingers never tired of running gently through it, if only to prove his eyes wrong. He’d never really had an interest in hair before, on any of the girls back in New York or even on Mello, but for some reason he found Hitsugaya’s snow-white spikes to be downright entrancing, and it was nearly impossible to stop touching them once he’d started. Hitsugaya sighed and leaned into it after a moment, and Matt grinned at his reaction before the shinigami’s voice broke the semi-silence, vaguely irritated and a little curious.

“What are you doing?”

Matt scraped his nails lightly over his scalp, trying to pull another reaction from him. “Nothing. I thought you didn’t mind.”

“I don’t normally, but I’m trying to watch a movie, you know?”

Matt glanced at the television screen and was quickly reminded of why he had been distracting himself with Hitsugaya’s hair in the first place. Oh yeah. He shifted a little.

“It’s about a flying snowman, and it’s wordless. Does it really require your full attention?”

Hitsugaya snorted softly, arranging himself so that he was settled more comfortably against Matt’s chest. “You’re the one who told me to watch it.”

“No,” Matt corrected, trying to distract Hitsugaya from it as well, “I offered to let you watch it. There’s a difference.”

Another snort. Matt couldn’t see his face, but he knew there was an eye-roll taking place right about now. “Regardless, I’m watching it now, so quiet down a minute, will you?”

Matt sighed. “Fine, fine. It‘s almost over anyway.” There was no reply, so Matt looked around for something else to focus his attention on. He had no idea now why he’d thought watching this thing with Hitsugaya had been a good idea; it was about snowmen, for Christ’s sake, dancing around with some random kid while it snowed. Big fucking deal. If Matt had been able to remember that much about it, he never would have brought it up.

“You’re fidgeting,” Hitsugaya told him suddenly, and Matt looked down to see that he was glancing back at him out of the corner of his eye. “Why are you so fidgety? You weren’t like this for Star Wars.”

This time it was Matt’s turn to snort. “That’s because Star Wars has a fucking plot. This is dumb.” Maybe if Hitsugaya knew he hated it now, he wouldn’t remember that he’d said he loved it as a kid.

No luck. Hitsugaya smiled, and Matt could see the hint of a smirk in it. “I think it’s cute,” he said, a bit of a lilt to his tone. Matt moved to stroke the hair on the back of his neck in another attempt to distract him.

“If you like kiddy stuff, maybe. Nothing happens in it.”

Hitsugaya shifted again so that he could look at Matt more clearly. “You said it reminded you of me. You even uploaded this song.” He nodded briefly at the screen, where the snowman in the hat and the kid were currently flying over a snowy forest. Matt could feel a blush creeping over his cheeks, and fought desperately to make it go away.

“That’s because all I remembered about it was the snow and the flying and…stuff.” He mentally kicked himself. He’d been about to say something stupid like grace and awe, but that would have been embarrassing as hell, and Hitsugaya probably would have asked him to clarify what he meant. Close one.

“Stuff?” Hitsugaya wanted to know. He twisted in Matt’s arms so that he could nuzzle along his jaw, and Matt sighed comfortably, letting an arm drift down the shinigami’s back to curl around his waist.

“Mm-hm,” he said lazily. “Like that green snowman hat. I thought of you the moment I saw it.”

Hitsugaya snorted again, and this time it was accompanied by a soft chuckle. “You can’t be serious for more than a minute can you?”

“Mmm, maybe if there was some monetary incentive...” He drifted his lips over Hitsugaya’s cheekbone to his ear, grazing the skin with his teeth gently. A moment later Hitsugaya was suddenly straddling his lap, and Matt was blinking at him in surprise. “What--”

“Would physical incentive work?” the shinigami interrupted, slipping his hands under Matt’s shirt and sliding them slowly over his stomach, grinning a little when it twitched. Matt blinked again, pleasantly startled.

“...I thought you were watching the movie.”

“I’m watching you now.”

“But I’m not doing anything.”

“I want you to tell me what you meant.” He nipped at Matt’s chin gently, and Matt lowered his head a little to kiss him lightly, trying to distract him again.

“I didn’t mean anything.” He slid the hand around Hitsugaya’s waist under his shirt and up his back, tracing the bump of his spine with his fingertips. The shinigami squirmed a little and he grinned.

“Liar. You remember sensations before you remember images, especially at such a young age. So what do you remember feeling that reminded you of me?” He stopped talking long enough to drag his teeth carefully over the front of Matt’s throat, and Matt tipped his head back with a soft, barely perceptible groan. Damn him, his mind was starting to go fuzzy.

“Nothing,” he lied, his nails digging a little into Hitsugaya’s back. He lifted his free arm to bury his fingers in the hair at the base of the shinigami’s neck, tugging his head up to trace light butterfly kisses across his cheeks and over his nose, smiling when he was done. “Unless you want me to tell you that you subconsciously remind me of big, bulky snowmen?”

Yet another snort. Matt should start counting them and giving Hitsugaya a tally at the end of the day. He might have, if he wasn’t certain it would earn him a good five minutes frozen to something unpleasant.

“That’s not what I meant and you know it. Why won’t you tell me?” He leaned forward to mirror what Matt had just done, his nails grazing the top of his stomach with just enough pressure to make him squirm. Not fair. Matt tightened his grip in his hair.

“Because there’s nothing to tell. I really don’t remember all that much about it, aside from that song.”

“Then what about when you watched it?” Hitsugaya pressed, obviously curious. He nibbled on Matt’s lower lip teasingly, and when Matt tried to close the distance between them for a real kiss he pulled away. “Tell me about that. You said it was from when you were a kid.”

Matt settled back against the couch with a very obvious pout, his gaze flickering briefly from Hitsugaya’s lips to his eyes. “Yeah, and? That’s why I don’t remember anything. It was too long ago.” He tried to kiss him again. Hitsugaya met his lips for a moment before tilting his head to kiss beside his nose instead.

“Hnn. How long ago was it? Or do you not want to talk about it?” He pulled away suddenly, concerned that he had crossed some line by bringing up his past, and Matt whimpered softly at the loss of contact. He tugged him back again and sighed at the warmth, kissing his chin softly.

“Mmm, I don’t mind. It was back when I was five-ish and still with my parents.” He kissed Hitsugaya slowly, teasing his mouth open gently, and moaned softly in response to the shinigami’s whimper. They were both breathing heavily when it broke a moment later, and Hitsugaya leaned in to nuzzle along his jaw to his ear, his hands sliding up to stroke his chest.

“Your parents?” He nipped at the skin behind it, and Matt shivered, his hand sliding down again to clutch at his waist.

“Nnh, yeah. ‘Cause I didn’t get movies after them till I was in Winchester.” He nipped at Hitsugaya’s ear in return, tongue flicking out to trace the rim, eliciting a shiver.

“So...you watched it with them?” Hitsugaya asked breathlessly, squirming on top of him. Matt barely managed to stifle a low groan, shifting to that he could hold the shinigami more tightly.

“Probably.” He moved his hands so that he could drag them both up Hitsugaya’s sides suddenly, squirming himself at the way Hitsugaya moaned and rubbed against him.

“You can’t...remember?” He sucked suddenly on the skin beneath Matt’s ear, and Matt arched against him with a guttural grunt, his breathing haggard.

“Nngh, Christ, no,” he panted, arching his chest against the hands there. “Too long ago.”

“Do you...” Hitsugaya let his question fade with a quiet whimper as he scratched at Matt’s collarbone, then tried again. “I mean, were they...What…Nnh...” He quieted again when Matt sucked hard on the side of his neck, panting.

“Were they what?” Matt pressed curiously, smoothing the spot over with his tongue.

“Do you remember...why...”

Matt paused when he realized that Hitsugaya’s squirming had turned to one of discomfort, and he pulled back to nuzzle this shinigami’s forehead, nosing the soft hairline gently. “Why what?” he urged softly. Hitsugaya bit his lip.

“Why you...and they...” He stopped and buried his face in Matt’s neck, and Matt stroked his hair softly, his senses returning to him. “Mmph. Nevermind.” His voice was muffled. Matt hesitated a moment before kissing his forehead reassuringly.

“Are you asking what happened to them?” he clarified softly. Hitsugaya nodded.

“But you don’t have to tell me,” he mumbled, his hands curling on Matt’s chest. “I know you and Mello don’t want to talk about it--”

“I don’t mind,” Matt interrupted, stroking his back with his free hand. “It’s just not that important to me anymore. I like where I ended up.” He smiled and nudged Hitsugaya’s chin up so he could kiss him gently, and he could tell the shinigami knew what he meant by the way he sighed.

“All right. I just get curious sometimes...” He let the sentence trail off and rested his cheek against Matt’s chest, head tilted so he could see the television again. “Especially when you show me things like this. It’s not the kind of thing I think of when I think of you.”

Matt grinned and played with his hair idly, his attention on it instead of the movie again. “Oh? And what do you think of, then?”

He could feel Hitsugaya grin against his collarbone. “Cigarettes,” the shinigami teased. “You smoke too much.”

Matt laughed; they’d had this conversation before. “That’s one habit you’re not going to break me of, I’m afraid.”

“Have I broken you of others?”

“I’m here with you instead of playing Grand Turismo, aren’t I?”

Hitsugaya snorted, and Matt ran his fingers along the back of his neck with a satisfied grin. “I’m honored.”

“You should be. I just unlocked the Mazda 6.”

Matt could feel the rumble in Hitsugaya’s chest as he chuckled, and he settled under him comfortably with a grin, his arms wrapping themselves around the shinigami’s waist. He supposed he could tell him. He didn’t mind; hadn’t thought about it for years, and hadn’t been asked in even longer. It just wasn’t something that came up in daily conversation, was all. He took a deep breath and sighed.

“I think I was six.”

Hitsugaya shifted. “Six?”

“Mm-hm.” Matt shifted as well, his eyes on the screen now. “When I was sent to my first orphanage.”

There was a pause as the shinigami blinked. “Oh. There was more than one?”

“Several, actually,” Matt replied evenly. “At least five. I didn’t really count them at that age.”

“Understandable,” Hitsugaya murmured. Matt felt his arms slip down his sides and work between him and the couch to curl around his back. “Why so many?”

“Mmm, I dunno,” Matt sighed. He nosed his hair for a moment while he thought about it. “I didn’t like them, I guess. Kept getting shuffled from one to the other for bad behavior.”

“Bad behavior?” Hitsugaya wanted to know, then shushed Matt when he opened his mouth to respond. “Nevermind, I think I can guess.” He sighed and began stoking Matt’s back through his shirt, turning his head to nuzzle his neck in what Matt assumed was supposed to be a comforting manner.

“I’m all right, you know,” Matt felt the need to point out. “It was a long time ago. And I never got kicked out of Wammy’s.”

Hitsugaya rested his chin on Matt’s chest and smiled up at him. “Did you try?” Matt grinned at him.

“Of course.”

“How old were you?” He nuzzled Matt’s chin softly.

“Mmm, maybe eight?” Matt tipped his head back a little, sighing. “I can’t remember for sure. I think two birthdays went by since my parents dropped me off though, so somewhere around there.” He lifted his head and blinked when he felt Hitsugaya suddenly pull away, frowning at the look on his face. “What? Does that surprise you? It’s pretty simple math, I thought...” He trailed off when the shinigami shook his head.

“No, just...” He sighed and looked down. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bring up painful memories.”

Matt stared blankly for a moment before a soft smile split his face, and he leaned forward to kiss Hitsugaya’s forehead. “They’re not painful. Since when do I voluntarily bring up painful stuff?”

“But your parents...”

“Sucked,” Matt finished for him. “But I’m not with them anymore, am I? I’m with you. And you’re the opposite of painful.” He grinned so that Hitsugaya could see he meant it.

“I guess...” the shinigami said slowly, obviously hesitant. “I’m glad, though. That I’m not painful to you, and that you’re not with them if they were.”

“Not going to throw me out for bad behavior?” Matt teased as he scratched lightly as his lower back. Hitsugaya looked at him again and grinned, arching it the tiniest bit.

“That depends on your definition of it.”

“And what’s yours?”

Hitsugaya didn’t miss a beat. “Leaving your dirty dishes in the living room, I think. That’ll get you tossed out for sure.” He smiled and pressed his lips to Matt’s lightly as the latter struggled to come up with a comeback, then again as his kiss effectively silenced him. He kissed his chin once, lowering his eyes, and added a soft, “I’m glad you told me. It means a lot, you know?”

Matt stroked his sides gently. “I know. It does to me, too. But I don’t mind you knowing. And I won’t lie if you ask about something, even if it’s...embarrassing.”

Hitsugaya looked at him again, this time with an amused smirk. “So I can ask you which Care Bear was your favorite, and you’d answer?”

“Only if you want the VHS tape wrapped around your neck.”

Hitsugaya pouted. “Favorite My Little Pony?”

“I’ll feed you my plastic replicas.”

“Ninja Turtle?”

Matt grinned. “Donatello.”

Hitsugaya smirked. “Figures.”

Matt grinned. “And you’re April?”

“Splinter,” Hitsugaya countered, then paused and blinked. “I shouldn’t know these characters.”

Matt laughed and kissed his forehead. “Your geekification is nearly complete, my young Padawan.” He continued to chuckle as Hitsugaya rolled his eyes, but shifted for him when the shinigami settled back against him.

“I’m older than you are, you know?”

“I know. The age spots took a while to get over.”

Hitsugaya snorted and shoved him, and Matt laughed as he made himself comfortable again. “That’s six, by the way.”

“Six what?”

“Six times you’ve snorted at me since I turned the movie on.”

Hitsugaya rolled his eyes, and Matt yelped as he felt his entire backside grow suddenly cold. “Fuck!”
