Here is the article. I wrote a reply to it under "Greenier". People are coming up with all the bad reasons why the ban shouldn't be lifted, but I was thinking we could come up with positive reasons why it should be. For one, we quit going there because we didn't have anything to do there other than walk, when we got kicked out of the park. They label young people as trouble makers in the article, as said by some club owner, while portraying his young daughter as victim prey to older men and alcohol. Cheap shot, asshole. Maybe if there were things to do downtown people wouldn't turn to crime. No matter fucking what people will drink, and people will abuse alcohol. That can't be controlled. Apparently keeping the ban will keep people from being killed but I know that fucking will not solve anything. Cheap shot, again. Maybe if we fostered a community of healthy activity crime wouldn't occur. Maybe if people drank in safe situations it would be okay; not when driving was involved. But how do you stop that? I guess I'll post what I wrote:
"That's great if it will go through. They have shooed everyone away with the ban. Not to mention the little places have closed. Maybe if we could get out of this slump, rebuild the neat places & reject the upscale crap, we could get something back. Trying to be Naples is going to get an abandoned Naples downtown with no positive activity. Fort Myers doesn't make nearly enough money to be anything like Naples. It's rather unfair to relate crime to young people. If we foster an atmosphere that doesn't allow boredom with plenty of activity, crime wouldn't occur. Nothing bad happens downtown because no one goes there anymore! Mixing alcohol with stressed people may or may not cause something bad to happen. People have to be responsible when drinking, of course. Accidents happen when people don't pay attention to how much they drink. You can't blame the city for one person's actions. [someone's niece died and they were blaming the city and the bars] ... The downtown scene before 02 was more alive than it has ever been. It's suffering without young people."
It starts to bring in things that don't even involve the downtown situation. It's a murky problem. But I know downtown isn't healthy, and will continue to become abandoned while on this upscale-bullshit-kick. The only people that go there are dude bros, dude hoes, and older people. Isn't downtown supposed to be full of old shops and little stores? Coffee shops and shows happening? Or perhaps that's just what I want. Because that's what it used to be when I was in high school and downtown was pregnant with activity.
