Today I went to the Lotus Supercenter, which is pretty much like a Meijer.
I saw:
- an Australian wine called "Blue Nun." Someone let me know if its any good; the label certainly looked interesting. Also, I saw a label for a chinese red wine called "Great Wall."
- Small opaque white plastic bags of something soft, sitting next to a pile of sausages in the meat section. They were 1RMB each, which is like 12.5 cents. I suspect they are bags of lard, but didn't ask in case I was right.
- Huge crates full of rice, crates the size used to hold watermelon. There were different bins of rice going for different prices, and a whole person could easily hide in one of the buckets of rice and not get found. (also, I had an Amelie moment the other day while I was in a grocery store. There was a crate full of mung beans and I stuck my hand in.)
My aunt and I were in a grocery store and I pointed out someone wearing a fancy semi-formal dress and high heels. Why would someone dress up just to go grocery shopping? I just didn't get it (same way I don't understand why some girls dress really fancy and wear high heels on a plane; high heels are not conducive to picking luggage off a carousel). My aunt told me when she first arrived in Shanghai she saw people who wore pajamas out in the street, and wear them with high heels. Like it's fashionable. She said that dressing that way means they can show off, and say "look at me, I own a matching set of pajamas." Maybe it's a class thing? funny. and sad.
Also, yesterday I got a mosquito bite on my eye.
I'll repeat that.
mosquito bite.
EYE.
