I went to the hospital today. I finally fell victim to the demons hanging out in my kitchen at work. In the last 3 weeks 3 cooks have been to the hospital. I was the third. The first one cut off his fingernail. The second cut 70 percent of the ligaments in her left hand and had to get 12 stitches and surgery to repair the damage to her ligaments. It took me 2 serious injuries to finally go see a doctor. On saturday during the lunch rush I managed to burn the entire underside of my right wrist. I burt it on the steamer. Its a really deep burn because steam heat is a very penetraiting heat. Think about it. Steam is the hot shit that comes off of boiling water. Not imagine throwing your arm in a pot of boiling water but turn that up a few degrees. It really fucking hurt. Not five minuets later I thought it would be a great idea to grab a sizzle plate that just came out of the oven (500 degrees) with my bare hand. My thumb took the brunt of that one, I got a nice dime sized burn the blistered on my thumb. I should have gone and seen a doctor for the burn on my wrist but decided I could take care of it on my own. After a couple of days it stopped hurting. Today at work I was cutting carrots on a mandolin. Mandolins are the number one piece of equipment in a kitchen that sends cooks to the doctor. I am no exception to this. I completly removed a very large chunk on skin from the knuckle on my right thumb. I couldent get it to stop bleeding so I bandaged it up as best I could and off to the E.R I went. There wasn't really anything they could do for me other than to clean and bandage the wounds and tell me how to take care of them. My hand although clumsy is still operational.
I blame these acts of stupidity on lack of sleep and working too much. I just need to be more careful or the next one will be more serious.
