A lot has happened in the past few days. My parents and my grades arrived together. My parents were fine, my grades initially were relatively good -- but I wanted to do better. I spent last weekend taking my parents around to The Breaks Interstate Park, Railroad Museums, and various places around Southwestern Virginia. My father got some fossilized dinosaur poop. I had rocks fall on my head during my pursuit of the perfect fossil. Bugger went to the vet and found out that her "health problems" amounted to the fact that she was gaining weight, as normal.
The week at work has been crazy. I have been deep into 'hollers looking for witnesses. Dirt paths leading between mountain valleys, lined with rusted autos, crammed with goats and angry dogs, all leading to run-down 1960s trailers that contained witnesses. It's been an experience. It wasn't a bad time, it just made me realize how lucky I really was. The attorneys have been stressed with the upcoming death penalty trial next week. Its the 25th hour for a plea. We will see what happens. A man's life or life without parole for 25 years. Its a choice I never want to have to make.
I received some good news and bad news about school. One of my friends will not be coming back due to a deficiency with their grades. The rest shall be back, even if they are on probation. I fared well on the second set of grades. The school erred in issuing the Property II grades and transposed random numbers and actual grades. The gods were smiling, the correction boosted my grades. Overall I fall in the top 15% of the class. Its not the tip top, but its a hell of a lot better than being at the bottom 15%. I have ordered my books for next year, and my semester starts when they arrive. I will be taking Appellate Advocacy, Constitutional Law I, Criminal Procedure, Professional Ethics and Responsibility, and Evidence. I will be working at IS for workstudy, participating in the Republican Law Society, Moot Court Board, and ATLA. It will be tight, but it will be fun. I am excited to get back to learning.
I plan to spend the end of the summer in Annapolis with my parents and a week in Seattle with Jaime. Luck would have it that Jaime's residence is getting a major overhaul while I am visiting and I may find myself spending ungodly amounts of time at Bungie, flopped in their "test area" reading Hornbooks on Evidence. Because it is crunch time for Jaime, I won't see him very much. But, at least he will have someone to eat dinner with and spoil. I will miss the time lost, but I am happy to take anything I get. These final spans of years apart are really getting to wear thin. At least there is an end to the tunnel. 2 years = One doctorate (me) + One multimillion selling video game (him).
Addendum: The light could be an oncoming train, or the fog lights of a trans-atlantic plane, or the shine of a Euro's cufflinks. Thank goodness for detours in life. The good kind, where you find something vastly better than you thought you were headed toward.
