Save The Sound Habitat Restoration
Calling All Volunteers!
Save the Sound is seeking up to 30 volunteers for an upcoming habitat restoration project in Rocky Neck State Park, located in Niantic, CT.
From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Friday, September 11th, volunteers will help with a native dune grass transplanting effort at the mouth of Bride's Brook. All necessary tools and refreshments will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and to wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Appropriate for 13 years & older.
The dune grass planting is the first stage in a significant restoration project. Bride's Brook hosts one of the premier river herring runs in the state. Currently, the herring swim through two metal pipes and under a dune system in order to get from Long Island Sound to fresh water spawning habitat. However, these pipes are beginning to collapse. This fall, the eroding pipes will be replaced with an open channel and large box culvert, which will allow better tidal flow and an assured fish migration. The adjoining marsh system will be healthier as well.
Save the Sound, a program of Connecticut Fund for the Environment, received funding for this project from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the Reinvestment and Recovery Act, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The Parks Division of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection will manage the construction project.
Please contact Kierran Broatch at kbroatch@cfenv.org if interested in volunteering.
While I was on vacation this summer at Giant's Neck, right next to Rocky Neck State Park, I did see some things that I would have loved to help "Clean Up", so, this is an intriguing invitation to me. Unfortunately it is taking place on a Friday morning, when I usually work. Perhaps, if someone else was feeling ambitious and would like to join me I would consider making the drive down. I could even check and see if the house is available, I have a feeling that it is probably reserved though since this is only a few weeks away. Oh well. If you know anyone in the New London area that would be interested, please pass on the info!!!
