Walcott - Don't compare me with Thierry Henry
Theo Walcott wants to be known as his own man - not the new Thierry Henry.
The 18-year-old Arsenal forward struck twice in the sumptuous 7-0 win over Slavia Prague on Tuesday night. It was only the second time Walcott had played up front and his conversion from winger to striker follows in the footsteps of the record-breaking French striker who left Emirates Stadium for Barcelona in the summer.
The former Southampton star has always held up Henry as one of his heroes but wants to keep any comparisons at arm’s length.
“It was brilliant to train with him every day and take bits out of his game,” said Walcott. But I'm my own player.
“People are going to compare the second goal to Thierry but it was my own goal. I just want to be my own player and get a few more goals. People are always going to compare me to Thierry - the way I run and everything - but as I keep saying I will be my own player.
“Everyone was disappointed when he left but in a way we have sort of forgotten about him at the moment with us doing so well. But he is doing brilliant at Barcelona and I wish him all the best.”
[Source] Fair enough, I think. I'm sure that some people might think that he shouldn't care coz Thierry is a great player, and that's true. But it must be a bit daunting to be compared to Thierry. And plus, Theo's still young. He's got a long way to go, and so far, so good.
