I had my first day of work yesterday. Well, it wasn't really work, like teaching, because the kids weren't there, but it was a faculty meeting and then ABA training. Six hours of ABA training! It was long and hot and tiring, but very interesting. ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis, and it's the method of teaching that we use with the kids on the Autism Spectrum. I learned a lot about autistic students that I didn't know, but I was also excited to hear her talk about a lot of stuff that I DID know. I feel really prepared to take on this job. I learned a little bit about the little boy that I'm going to be with, Michael, although my teacher Keri doesn't know too much about him because she wasn't his teacher this school year. Apparently he has a lot of behavior issues and he's a bit loud, especially with his tantrums; but when I met him in March he was very pleasant and very chatty and seemed like a lot of fun. I guess I can't really know what to expect until I get there and just meet him and start working with him. Sitting in the training yesterday was really good because it made me feel like this definitely is the right thing for me and this is definitely what I want to do with my life. These kids are so special and so amazing and I can't wait to be working with them and understanding them more and more. It makes me excited to get back to school and start in on my education courses. I know that it's a lot of work, but I also know that I can do it and I am so ready to get right in there and work really hard.
