An armed society is not a polite society
By two days into 2011, two people were shot and killed in Portland. (The first, for those who don't want to read the links, was a bouncer at a club, on New Year's Eve; the second was a homeless man who, at least according to police reports, threatened officers with a knife and was unstopped by a Taser.)
Commentary is not very useful; everything's been said. Culture of violence, senseless tragedy, gun control, no gun control, respect for the homeless, no respect for the homeless, respect for life, no respect for life. This issue has been done, and we have failed to find a consensus. But it's only the morning of January 3rd. We have to do better than this.
