The experts advise job seekers to research the companies they wish to apply to. Juliet is unsure where they stand when the companies contact the job seekers first.

Juliet hadn't been searching for a job. She hadn't gone any further than the constant internal drone of “I want a new job, I want a new job”. Perhaps it was lazy on her part not to start searching. Really searching, not gazing at classified ads in the papers and on the internet. Then again, she believed she had a valid reason for not looking: Edmund wouldn't let her leave.

It must be a special kind of hell she's in, one where her husband dumps her, kicks her out of his house, but won't let her out of his professional sights. Done with her body, but not her mind. And what sort of special personal hell is she in, that she lets him do this to her? She'd say it's because she doesn't respect herself, as if that were some new kind of reflective revelation and not something she's known for a while. She lets Edmund do it to her because she doesn't believe she deserves to be treated any better.

Yet, despite this low self esteem, out of the blue comes a company wanting her! Her, just some nameless, faceless, insignificant cog in the Miami Central University Medical Research Laboratory who hasn't made a splash in the papers, the journals. The only reason why she hasn't declined to their interview is because... because of something she can't quite put her finger on, a reason that trumps all her fears about Edmund and all her concerns about the lack of information available about Mittelos Bioscience, the company wanting to hire her. There's something driving her to Mittelos, some greater purpose.

She wants to find out what it is.
