“Let him through,” he heard someone say over the raucous of the backstage. Before it had a chance to register, his arm was grabbed and he was dragged past security. “He’s my friend.”
Iwaizumi had felt out of his element from the beginning. The door closed, his hand was released, and he saw Oikawa properly for the first time. This other world had already left him speechless, now Iwaizumi’s wits left him entirely.
“You really came,” Oikawa beamed. “We don’t have much time to talk though… I’ll give you a signed copy of my CD.”
“No need,” Iwaizumi said. Oikawa pressed it into his hand anyway. Along with the signature were the digits of a phone number and a completely unnecessary amount of stars.
He already had an unsigned copy at home, of course. Iwaizumi had bought a lot of merchandise in one go, in an uncharacteristically impulsive act brought about by sheer disbelief that Oikawa had got even more annoying and even more attractive in the time they’d been apart. A feat that shouldn’t have been possible.
But face to face like this, Iwaizumi could see the familiar canniness and determination to move forwards that had defined his teammate through the years he’s known him. The old pang from a long, long crush was overwhelmed by the surge of pride Iwaizumi felt.
“Are you staying?” Oikawa asked.
The forced casualness of the question and the flicker of uncertain eyes told Iwaizumi that Oikawa didn’t mean just for the performance.
“If you want me to,” Iwaizumi said, trying not to sound equally guarded.
“Haven’t I always done better with Iwa-chan by my side?” Oikawa smirked.
“Dumbass,” Iwaizumi snorted. “Do your best if I’m there or not. Maybe then I’ll stick around, since someone needs to keep an eye on you.”
He was not expecting Oikawa to throw his arms around him and kiss the breath from his lungs. Iwaizumi could only hold onto Oikawa’s shoulders, his response sloppy from being stunned. It didn’t seem to bother Oikawa, who looked as if it wasn’t just his ego that was swelling when he broke away licking his lips.
“You still need a bigger vocabulary,” Oikawa said huskily. Then he winked and whirled out the door, leaving Iwaizumi both outraged and aroused.
