Ryo's jeans hang over the back of the sofa, his keys half falling out of the pocket. He doesn't notice until Uchi points it out.
"You're staying the night here anyway, right?" Uchi says, his hands moving up Ryo's thighs, the outside, then the inside. Then Ryo wakes up, sitting upright in his bed.
There is a text message from Uchi on his phone. "Call me when you're awake?" like it's a question, rather than a request. A matter of whether Ryo will or won't and they both know the answer to that.
Ryo dials the numbers and waits for Uchi to pick up on the other line.
---
"Hello?" Uchi says, trying to feign sleep in his voice.
"I'm awake," Ryo says.
"I should have said call me when you and also everyone else in Japan are awake," Uchi says.
"Should I call you tomorrow?" Ryo says, like he's worried, and Uchi knows it's probably time to stop being vague.
"It's okay," Uchi says. "I wasn't sleeping."
---
Ryo brings two sets of cards. Uchi takes them all out of his hands when Ryo comes to the door.
"You play cards?" Uchi asks.
"Sometimes," Ryo says. He watches Uchi shift the decks around in his hands. Then Ryo laughs a little. "Really, they were just... near the door."
"So, you gonna teach me a game?"
Ryo shrugs. "Sure."
---
Uchi looks soft. It's the only way Ryo can think to describe it while he watches Uchi sleep on the couch. Silly that he's sleeping on the couch in his own apartment, but they played card games until Uchi's eyes started closing and once his body started rolling forward on the couch, Ryo told him to just sleep, he'd clean up. There are bottles on the table and cards in random places, some of them on the floor. Uchi sleeps quietly and Ryo puts a blanket over him before he goes to sleep in Uchi's bed.
This is strange too, he thinks, but he doesn't think he should leave.
He sleeps and dreams about Uchi's hands again, between his thighs this time, kneading the muscle and there is just enough friction to where he thinks Uchi might make him come without even touching him directly. He swallows, holds Uchi's forearm tight with his hands.
"I wasn't sleeping," Uchi says. "Can you come over?"
His thumb over the zipper of Ryo's jeans, tracing the line up and down again.
"Is something wrong? Did something happen?" Ryo asks.
Uchi kisses Ryo's belt, he pulls on it with his teeth and then lets go so it snaps back into Ryo's body.
When Uchi answers, his voice is so far away. "I just want to know," Uchi says. "That's all, I just want to know."
"I'll come by," Ryo says. "Give me twenty minutes?"
Ryo picks up the decks of cards that are on a table near the door. He doesn't want to come empty handed and he knows two or three games. One of the decks feels thinner than the other, but it doesn't matter too much. He doesn't know the games very well anyway.
---
Ryo's throat feels dry when he wakes up, so he goes to the sink for some water. Uchi shifts around on the couch. He doesn't look comfortable.
They always tell Ryo to touch Uchi in certain ways when they take photos together. Put your hand on his knee, arm around his shoulders, touch his face, his fingers, his waist.
When they were boys, Uchi jerked Ryo off after a show. He didn't say anything with words, just moved his hands curiously on Ryo's body and Ryo didn't want to stop him. He felt hot and high from all of the energy he'd used at the show and Uchi's hand in his jeans almost made him feel calm. Then he wanted to feel Uchi, so he did the same. Uchi kissed him when he tried to speak and they never talked about it afterwards.
"It's just something boys do," Uchi said, vaguely. But Ryo thought about it sometimes after that. When they told him to put is arms around Uchi and it felt like that was the only place he wanted to be.
He gets on his knees near the couch and pulls Uchi's blanket further up around his shoulders. Ryo twists the ends of Uchi's hair between his fingers, so much darker than it used to be.
"I'm not sleeping," Uchi says, his voice is raspy and thin.
Then he pulls on the back of Ryo's neck, pulls him so close that Ryo tastes Uchi's lips before he realizes that Uchi is kissing him. Uchi parts Ryo's lips with his tongue, then hesitates and turns his head a little to the side.
"This isn't why I asked you over," Uchi says. "Just so you know. And if you don't want to--"
But Ryo is kissing him again before he can say the rest. He doesn't want to talk about it, doesn't want to think about it, just wants it.
Uchi shifts under the blanket, his form rising and falling under the faded fleece. Ryo kisses Uchi's jaw, then his neck, then just wants to kiss every bit of skin he can find.
There is a loud siren. Three sharp knocks at the door.
"Everyone get out!"
---
They wait two hours, outside of Uchi's apartment building with all of the other tenants. It's cold outside and Ryo keeps his arm around Uchi's waist. Uchi can't look Ryo in the eye.
"Gas leak," Uchi says. "Huh."
"You heard that all the way over here?" Ryo asks. Some men are speaking to each other near the doors. There are two fire trucks and a police car.
"Just seems like it," Uchi says. "Obviously there isn't a fire. No one is being arrested. Has to be a gas leak."
Ryo reaches for his cell phone and checks the time. It's after 4 AM.
But it turns out it was a fire. Popcorn on a stove, the smoke crept down the hallway and set all of the alarms off. They'll let everyone back in now and sorry for the inconvenience.
"Just as well," Uchi says. Ryo presses his lips together.
---
Uchi loans Ryo a pair of shorts and this time Ryo sleeps on the couch. His jeans hang over the back and his keys starting to fall out of the pocket.
Uchi walks to his bedroom, then out again, pacing a few times before he sits down on the couch next to Ryo. "I'm not going to be able to get back to sleep," Uchi says.
"I'll stay up," Ryo says. "It's almost time for me to get up anyway."
"Don't tell anyone you came here," Uchi says. "I mean, I guess you can, but I'd rather you didn't."
Uchi falls back onto the couch and Ryo's jeans fall behind it, impossibly stuck between the couch and the wall.
---
Ryo's alarm goes off just before 6 AM, when the light from the window hasn't quite reached across the room. Ryo's fingers spread out on the foor, searching for his cell phone, when he feels the warmth of the sunlight on the carpet.
He turns off the alarm. "Snooze," he says.
Uchi's body is heavy on top of his.
"That's ten minutes," Uchi says.
Ryo smiles. "Fifteen on mine."
"You never taught me any card games."
"I started to. You fell asleep."
Uchi sits up, then reaches behind the couch. "There," he says, when he retrieves Ryo's jeans. "You better get up anyway, you'll have to go home and change."
He almost wants Uchi to just say it out loud, but at the same time knows that he can't. Knows that he's had to write them down when the words wouldn't form in his mouth. But, Uchi doesn't even do that. He speaks with his hands, in actions. He watches Ryo until Ryo's alarm goes off again.
"I'll teach you a card game tonight," Ryo says.
"I'm busy tonight," Uchi says, looking past Ryo and at the window behind him.
"Tomorrow, then," Ryo says.
Silence hangs between them for a moment. Ryo pulls on his socks and starts to fold the corners of the discarded blanket together.
"I'll call you," Uchi says, picking up the cards one by one.
"Before 3 AM?" Ryo asks.
Uchi pushes on Ryo's shoulder. "We'll see," Uchi smiles.
