Just one for now: The Broken Wall

Jan 21, 2008 21:26

There's a story to this: Oakwood Cemetery, in Troy, NY, has a waterfall that flows through a broken wall, from a small pond beside the chapel. The pond was frozen, except right at the part where it broke through and flowed down into the ravine below, which - please trust me - is far steeper than it appears in this photograph. Because I am intelligent, I was not satisfied with merely hanging by one arm off a tree over the steep incline to take pictures. Instead I decided to climb onto the broken wall in question, not simply to take pictures, but just because I wanted a better look down the waterfall and into the ravine.

It was only once I was on the wall that I realized how stupid this was. Though the wall felt secure enough, if I fell to my left I'd fall through the ice of the pond; if I fell to my right I'd go tumbling into the ravine, jack-n-jill style. In the above picture, I am standing on said wall, relishing my recklessness.

Obviously, I survived.

(Addendum: I blame my oh-yeah-I-can-take-that! attitude on my burgeoning crush on the Canadian dude who does that Survivorman show on the Discovery Channel. Yes, it matters that he's Canadian. This brings my Discovery Channel show-host crush count to two. Guess the other one, I dares ya.)
